Establishing initial connections in a classroom is a very important aspect for learners and teachers during a new class session. The ties that are established play a vital role in setting up the tone for the entire learning experience. In this reflective assessment, I wish to reflect on activity 11, where a teacher writes three statements on the board and requires the students to identify the false statement. It is expressed that of the three statements, two are true, and one is false. The aim of this activity is to introduce him or herself to the students. It can be noted that the three statements are personal and tend to describe the persona. Through the statements, the students get to understand their teacher and the background they have in the course that is being taught. For a linguistic course, the students tend to have confidence when they know that their teacher has a lot of experience in teaching the subject or has lived in a country speaking the language for a long time. The students not only have confidence in the teacher but also tend to develop a loving attitude towards it.
The statements also play a role in assessing the grammar and knowledge of vocabulary. Different methods have been used in testing grammar and vocabulary. Mostly, linguistic teachers use gap-filling, paraphrasing, and completion as important methods of testing grammar and vocabulary. However, requiring the students to repeat sentences gives them an opportunity to evaluate their punctuation. Additionally, the students tend to learn new vocabulary as they repeat the sentences. The use of the sentences illustrated in activity 11 is a good way of evaluating speaking and listening, as well as reading and writing skills. The teacher can require the students to repeat the sentences around, thereby testing their speaking skills in the new language. This exercise can be a good one for younger learners and teenagers as opposed to adults. It should be noted that with listening, learners can need vocabulary, grammar as well and pronunciation knowledge so that they can negotiate the meaning of another person’s message. Additionally, with speaking skills, the learners are needed to produce the language themselves and share that message with others. However, reading around and repeating is more suitable for young learners who take it as joy. Adults may be more suited to identifying true and false statements without necessarily reading around.
Speaking is an important process of building and sharing meaning through the use of both verbal and nonverbal symbols in different contexts. Many linguistics have agreed that second language learners ought to learn how to speak a second language through interactions. Therefore, the activity presents an opportunity for the learners and the teacher to interact and start developing linguistic skills. In this activity, I like the fact that I would be able to know my teacher more. For example, I would like to know how many years my teacher has taught that subject and even which countries he or she has lived in. However, it would be challenging to know the truth or the false statement about the teacher since I did not have any background information about them. Therefore, I would have problems identifying the true of the false statement. To solve the problem, I would be required to ask the teacher more questions about themselves to understand them better.
