Introduction
Hip replacement can be defined as a surgery that is used to replace a damaged or worn-out hip joint. Additionally, different health factors can lead to hip replacement such as pain in the hip, lifestyle limitations and stiffness in the hip joint. A surgery of total hip replacement normally last between 2 to 3 hours; therefore, the use of tubing for anaesthesia is highly recommended. Moreover, the medics arrange broad anaesthesia with tubing to provide a strong airway as well as protect the respiratory tract.
It is important to note that the working stations are usually prepared before the arrival of the patient, and it is done through cleaning, checking as well as stocking up of the items and anaesthetic room. In addition to this, the preparation of right airway equipment involves the arrangement of Endotracheal tube, which is a cuffed tube of 7.5 in size. The Endotracheal tube is used for fameless, and they are prepared in different size ranging from 7 to 8, because of the difference in the human anatomy’s size from one patient to another. Laryngoscope blade of size 3 and 4 equipped with the handles for the purposes elevating the tongue for clear visualization. It is important to note that the lights are tested before the usage to avoid failures when the process or surgery begins. Facemask is also prepared with the sizes that fit both female and male.
The sizes of facemask include size 4 for females majorly and 5 for males. The facemask must be in the right size to cover and seal the nose and mouth well during ventilation. Furthermore, the eyes must be covered to prevent the comea against drying up as well as stopping the damage of the eyes during the surgery. To protect the eyes from drying up and further damage, an eye pad is used to shield the eyes. The lubricant gel is also required to provide lubrication to the tube before it is inserted as well as the syringe of 20 ml for the culf inflation. A tube tape is also important to secure the tape during the surgery for a hip replacement as well as the Guedel airways with the size of 2 or 3, which are used for the opening as well as the maintenance of airway doing the anaesthesia, which is essential for a free flow of air.
It is important to prepare the equipment that can be used in case of a difficult airway, and they include items such as bougie, Magill’s forceps, Laryngeal Mask, Stethoscope and Ambu bag. A Bougie is normally inserted through the body passageway, especially the trachea in order to widen and guide the endotracheal tube when the intubation is being done. The Magill’s forceps are also important to the tool during the difficult in intubation, and they are used to eliminate the foreign bodies from the patient. In addition to this, Magill’s forceps serves as a fibre optic that assists the scoping. A stethoscope is a tool that is used to ensure that the tube is rightfully placed, therefore it necessary to avail it during the intubation. Ambu bag should be prepared since it is very important for emergencies such as unexpected damage in the airway equipment or even the anaesthetic machines. Ambu bag provides positive pressure in the ventilation whenever the patients have a problem with breathing.
