Introduction
In the four healthcare organizations discussed above, it is apparent that the shared goal is improve the health of populations. Even though their goals vary, the common goal of the healthcare organizations is to increase medical responsiveness to the people they serve. In their various fields, healthcare organizations work to increase their range of services in their regions.
A healthcare administrator needs to have goals that they strive to achieve. Goal-setting is important because it makes a person be self-efficient. The following timeframes can act as a guide to set their goals.
Short-term: 6 months-2 years - in 6 months to three years, my goal is to have completed a Master's degree in nursing education. The action plan for meeting the goal is to go back to the university after my Bachelor's program completion. Continued education in nursing will help me to be knowledgeable about current trends in healthcare. Also, after every quarter, I expect to learn something new in the nursing field that will equip my knowledge of nursing activities.
Mid-range: 3-5 years - in 3 to five years, my goal is to build my clinical experience to the maximum. The action plan to meeting the goal is to find meaningful employment at a reputable hospital where I could gain the skills to become a professional. By building clinical experience, I expect to have developed interpersonal skills that would help e in the provision of care. Examples of the vital interpersonal skills that I expect to have mastered are collaboration and communication because they help e in assessing a patient's needs.
Long-term: 5-8 years - in five to 8 years, I expect that I should be an expert in the nursing field. The action plan to meeting the goal is to on a specific area of nursing specialty where I will gain more in-depth knowledge of the area. The level of mastery in the field will enable me to provide excellent patient care and enhance my communication as well as collaboration with healthcare teams. Besides that, my level of expertise will make me be more marketable and desirable in the nursing field.
The four types of goals presented in the lesson include the exciting, pressing, outcome, and bet the farm goals. I consider going back to school an exciting and pressing goal. Going back to school for a Master's program in nursing will give me a focus on a vision because it will help me in attaining my mi-range and long-term goals. My outcome goal is to build my clinical experience, which would later advance my bet the farm goal, to become an expert in my field. Price and Reichert (2017) indicated that since best practices and patient care standards are evolving, it is important to get an education through training to deliver the most possible care. Getting an education is my short-term goal, which I hope to achieve in the next 2 years.
The personal skills that I will need to attain my goals are communication and collaboration. Kreps (2016) indicated that due to the healthcare challenges, health care professionals need to sensitize communication and promote collaboration to improve patient care. Communication, for example, would help me to become versatile in my education program as well as provide individualized care to patients thereby building my clinical experience and increasing my expertise. Besides, the collaboration will help me in achieving my goals of building my clinical experience and becoming an expert in a way that I will manage to work with other health care teams. Bosch and Mansell (2015) talked about interprofessional collaboration in healthcare, which acts as a tool to creating highly successful teams. Collaboration skills will help me to gain a handful of knowledge in the treatment and care of a patient.
Meeting my goals will give me a sense of direction and focus. After meeting my short-term goal, I will know that I have to move forward to building my clinical experience. Afterward, I will be aware that I have to focus on becoming an expert in my field. Furthermore, meeting my goals will provide value to the healthcare profession because I will manage to provide satisfactory patient care across the continuum. I will manage to attend to a patient's needs because achieving my goals would mean being proficient in clinical experience and becoming an expert.
