Introduction
Growth and development is one of the notable activities that occur within the body if a human being. Typically, the growth and development of human beings starts when a person is in the womb and until he or she becomes an adult. Necessary precautions have to be observed when a person is developing from being a child to an adult. These precautions will ensure that a person development effectively. However, there are several challenges that certain people may experience during their growth and development. These issues are referred to as developmental issues, and they tend to affect a person from the earliest stage of life, which is in the womb. In most cases, these developmental issues tend to affect the regular activity that people undertake in their daily lives. Therefore, this research paper will conduct a detailed inquiry on particular developmental problems that is evident among various children in the classroom. Furthermore, this paper will discuss various teaching as well as learning strategies that are related to the identified developmental issue.
Developmental Issue
There is a wide range of developmental issues that have been identified by different medical researches. Some of these issues affect children and adults, while some affect both. However, most people that are affected by developmental issues are children. The children are the most affected because they are at a younger age, where they are supposed to learn a lot of concepts, especially in classrooms. These concepts are essential as they will play a significant role in their future lives. However, the developmental issues hinder them from learning various concepts in the classroom; hence, their future lives will be in jeopardy. One of the typical developmental problems that is common among children in the classroom is cerebral palsy. Cerebral palsy is a developmental condition that interferes with the muscle tone, motor skills, and movement. This condition results from the damage or abnormal development of the parts of the brain controlling movement and balance (Towns, Rosenbaum & Palisano, 2018). This condition prevents the body from moving in a coordinated and purposefully way. Furthermore, cerebral palsy can prevent normal body functions such as breathing, talking, and eating.
Historical, Sociocultural, Intellectual, and Physical Perspective of Cerebral Palsy
Cerebral Palsy one of the most common developmental issues that affect children in the classroom and can be explained from a historical, socio-cultural, intellectual, and physical perspective.
Historical Perspective
The historical perspective of cerebral palsy has been made possible through various great minds, dedicated people, and generous hearts who wanted to improve the lives of many people (Garfinkle et al., 2019). This developmental condition has been documented over history. The first description concerning these conditions was recorded in the work of Hippocrates as early as the 5th Century BCE. However, the comprehensive range study of the condition was started by William John Little in the 19th Century (Garfinkle et al., 2019). It is after William John Little that Spastic Diplegia was named the little disease.
Dr. William John Little began to the study of cerebral palsy by using his childhood disability as an example. Some of the innovative methods that were used by Dr. William John Little are still being employed to help people to date. Ever since, there have been several significant figures who have come up and done more research concerning cerebral palsy (Garfinkle et al., 2019). For instance, Sir William Osler became the first person to write a book on cerebral palsy and various concepts associated with it. Dr. Sigmund Feud became the third significant figure who claimed that cerebral palsy might develop from abnormal fetal development in the womb years before the medical sector adopted the concept. More researchers have conducted various studies intending to create awareness of the condition, including its causes, symptoms, and treatment options that can be used. The disability that is associated with Cerebral Palsy has allowed various parties to used technological advances to enable the affected person function even with their disabilities.
Sociocultural Perspective
The second perspective associated with Cerebral Palsy is the sociocultural perspective. The sociocultural perspective explains the lifestyles, customers as well as the values that form the basis of the society (Spittle, Morgan & Olsen, 2018). The major socio-cultural issue that is related to Cerebral Palsy is socioeconomic stratification. Socio-economic stratification shows that the number of people affected by Cerebral Palsy belongs to the lower socio-economic groups as compared to those in the higher socio-economic class.
Intellectual Perspective
Intellectual perspective can be used to explain cerebral palsy because the condition is associated with intellectual disability. A person who has cerebral palsy is most likely able to experience intellectual disability. Intellectual disability involves various limitations that are evident in intellectual functioning, such as reasoning, problem-solving, and learning (Spittle, Morgan & Olsen, 2018). Also, intellectual disability is evident in adaptive behavior, which involves every day social medial as well as practical skills.
Physical Perspective
Cerebral palsy can also be defined from the physical perspective. In this case, when a child has been diagnosed with cerebral palsy, his or her physical activity will be impaired (Maenner, Blumberg & Kogan, 2016). Therefore, it will be difficult for a person to take part in various physical activities such as walking, talking, and eating.
Theoretical Learning and Teaching Concepts to the Issue
Theoretical learning, as well as various teaching concepts, can be used to help understand Cerebral Palsy. In this case, the theoretical learning will involve learning various issues in theory rather than practical. This approach will help to understand some of the common issues that are related to cerebral palsy. Some of these issues may include the causes and treatment approaches that can be used for patients with cerebral palsy (Wright, Lam & Mistry, 2018).
The teaching concept that can be used to help in learning about this issue includes providing time for discussion. The time of discussion allows the student to come together and discuss various issues related to the diseases. Secondly, teaching social skills is another concept that can be used to help the learners be able to interact with each other well hence avoiding isolation (Ryan et al., 2015).
The third teaching concept that can be used for this issue is to develop individual education to learn about patients with Cerebral palsy. The Individual Education Plan will make it easy to monitor the learning progress about the patients diagnosed with cerebral palsy.
Important of Learning About the Issue
The cases of cerebral palsy have been on the rise as there are many children in classrooms who have shown the symptoms related to the disease. The rising cases of the disease have made it important to expand knowledge on these issues as teachers and families. The first reason for learning about this developmental issue is to understand the symptoms associated with the disorder (Saxena, Rao & Kumaran, 2014). Recognizing the symptoms is vital because it will help the family and teachers take appropriate action to help the students who are affected and know when to see a doctor.
Secondly, it is important to learn about this developmental issue to identify the treatment approaches to employ to help the children with the condition and help them perform their daily routine normally. Thirdly, it is important to expand knowledge on this developmental issue since it will help to understand some of the major causes. Understanding these causes is important because it will help in the prevention of future occurrences of the condition (Remijn & Vermaire, 2018).
The fourth importance of learning about this developmental issue to know the risk factors. Knowing these risk factors is essential as it will help the families and the teachers to avoid exposing the children to some of the issues that may result in cerebral palsy. Lastly, it is essential to learn about this condition because it will help in identifying some of the complications related to it (Remijn & Vermaire, 2018). Having a proper understanding of this complication will help the teacher and families adopt the best procedures to use to deal with the children having cerebral palsy.
Literature Review
Cerebral palsy is one of the conditions that is evident among several children in the classroom. This condition affects the children from taking part in daily activities as their colleagues. According to Schmetz, Magis, and Detraux, (2019), this condition is a series of disorders that interfere with the movement as well as muscle tone or the posture of a person. In most cases, the condition results from the damage which occurs to the immature brain as it starts to develop, and this is mostly before birth. Some of the main causes of cerebral palsy include genetic disorder, infections during pregnancy, and medical problems in a mother during pregnancy and untreated jaundice (Schmetz, Magis & Detraux, 2019). Also, brain damage leads to cerebral palsy, and it may occur due to accidents, poor flow of blood into the brain, lead poisoning, and bacterial meningitis.
The symptoms associated with this disorder begin to appear at a younger age that is mostly during infancy or the preschool period. Various symptoms are related to this development, and they are associated with the movement as well as coordination. The first symptom that is related to this condition is speech problems such as difficulty in speaking or spluttering, and this makes it difficult for a person to communicate (Schwartz & Rozumalski, 2016). The second symptom associated with cerebral palsy is difficulty in moving the muscles. This difficulty may be evident through stiff muscles, difficulty in walking, muscle, weakness, problems with muscle coordination, muscle rigidity, and muscle weakness. Thirdly, developmental issues can be used to show the presence of cerebral palsy (Schwartz & Rozumalski, 2016). Some of the activities that show developmental symptoms include learning disability, failure to thrive, speech delay in a child, and failure to thrive. Other symptoms that may be evident in a person who has cerebral palsy is constipation, difficulty in swallowing, difficulty in raising a leg, seizures, drooling, and hearing loss(Schwartz, & Rozumalski, 2016).
Children within condition may be significantly affected, especially in their studies. Cerebral palsy may prevent these children from hearing correctly what the teacher is teaching. Moving the muscles is hard for these children; hence, it will be difficult for them to take part in various practical activities in classrooms. In some cases, the behavioral issues related to cerebral palsy may affect the children to an extent where they cannot be able to concentrate in class. Moreover, cerebral palsy may affect the learning of the children in that, and it may be hard to read and write due to difficulties in muscle movement; hence, their academics will be affected (Verschuren & Peterson, 2016). The presence of these issues calls for immediate action of teachers as well as parents to help the children to be able to undertake their academics with ease.
