The choices which people make determine their life, happiness, and health. However, the environment which human beings live in has profoundly influenced the necessities which people covet. In today’s society, every person wishes to live a healthy life, but not everybody makes an appropriate decision towards achieving the goal. Besides, there are numerous factors such as lack of bounteous information and ignorance on the strategies leading to a healthy life. This paper scrutinizes the nexus of the traits and themes manifested in “Do you want lies with that?” and “Please Don’t Feed the people” essays on the accountability of human beings. People are responsible for their own health, happiness, and life.
On the one hand, William Saletan’s book, “Please Don’t Feed the people,” accentuates that poverty, infant mortality, and hunger issues have been plummeting for the past few decades because of the availability of adequate food across the world. Saletan argues that the presence of excessive food accessibility has resulted in negative impacts whereby people are increasing body weights, making them acquire ailments such as obesity, heart diseases, and diabetes. However, these maladies are facilitated by the decision which people build on what they consume. During the past decades, people were not used to eating fast foods compared to nowadays; hence during those periods, there were fewer overweight people compared to the recent epochs. On the other hand, the “Do you want lies with that?” article by Morgan Spurlock, explains the logic why the majority of the smokers are not able to quit smoking despite being aware of the adverse side effects of the habit. Spurlock claims that, although people understand the dangers of tobacco towards their health, they continue smoking and thus being responsible for their own life. The use of tobacco products has led many people to develop respiratory diseases, including lung disease, which is deadly. According to Spurlock, tobacco is the main leading harmful product that people are consuming at a higher rate. The article shows that society has accepted its use despite being aware of its adverse effects on human health.
People are responsible for their own health. The choices people make regarding what foods they consume and whether to smoke or not, determine their health status. In the “Do you want lies with that?” Spurlock shows that people choose to destroy health through smoking. In this case, they ignore the adverse effects of tobacco despite being aware of them. Therefore, by making their choices to smoke, they are responsible for having unhealthy lives (Carr, 1). According to William Saletan’s book, “Please Don’t Feed the people,” people make individual choices on the kind of food they want to consume. When they choose to consume fatty foods and are aware of the impacts, they are responsible for getting diseases like diabetes or becoming overweight. The idiom, “you are what you eat,” conspicuously elucidates the veracity of the modern-day system of living whereby the type of meals which people take control the facets of life notwithstanding the perils of developing diseases such as obesity and diabetes (Alcayaga-Davis, 3). Some decades back, there was less technology in the food production industry, and the food produced was of high quality and nutritious. Nowadays, people have advanced in technology but with a sacrifice of health. The government and the ministry of health are aware of the effects of these industries’ food products, yet they do not close them down because of the revenue they receive from the businesses. In this case, people have made their choices to imperil their health.
People are accountable for their own happiness. A healthy life is a happy life. Some people tend to define their satisfaction with the products they are consuming. In this case, some feel happy as they smoke while others feel happy when they eat delicious fast foods, but when they get sick, the happiness replaced with anguish. However, the decisions which people make determine if they will be happy or not. According to Saletan, people have the power to decide what food to eat and what not to consume. The food which someone consumes determines the health of that person; hence having good health makes people happy while those who are unhealthy cannot acquire a happy life (Alcayaga-Davis, 4). consuming fatty foods leads to diseases like diabetes, which makes someone have a stressful experience full of pains and agonies. The “Do you want lies with that?” article avers that the tobacco manufacturers are aware of the toxic effects of their products. They continue manufacturing the product and selling it to people. In this case, people make their own choices regarding tobacco consumption (Carr, 1). Typically, smoking is linked to critical respiratory disease, which causes the patient to live unhealthy life hence being unhappy. The tobacco-free campaigns have been carried out in most parts of the world, educating the people about the harmful effects of consuming tobacco substances. Yet, individuals make their decisions to continue smoking rather than choosing a happy, healthy lifestyle.
People are responsible for their own lives. The decisions people make on what they consume can determine whether someone will have a long or short life span. Leaders of the societies and nations such as government and other authoritative bodies like the ministries of food, and health, have made their choices to allow the production of unhealthy foods and tobacco products, leading to a shortened lifespan. As per the “Please Don’t Feed the people,” food industries are manufacturing foods that have excessive fats, leading to poor health hence reducing the general lifespan of people. They have added more preservatives to lengthen the period of the food products before their expiry. When people consume such foods, they increase the chances of developing diseases like obesity and diabetes, leading to early deaths. In this case, people are making critical decisions about killing themselves (Alcayaga-Davis, 3). They dupe their advertisements to manipulate people into buying their products by enlightening them on being skeptical while purchasing the products. The governmental bodies who have the power to bun the production of tobacco products are the ones who have authorized it with an adequate acquaintance of the health risks (Carr, 1). Therefore, people are responsible for their own lives, depending on their choices on what they do and consume.
Conclusion
In conclusion, “Please don’t Feed the People” and “Do you want lies with that?” articles expound that the choices people take are linked to their health status, lifestyle, and happiness. The decision to increase food production has resulted in increased overweight cases hence increasing diabetes rate in the society. The wrong choices people make are now the growing epidemic that exterminating a large number of people in the world. Due to the advancements in technological marketing, consumerism, and creations, people are unremittingly bombarded to over-indulge and overeat. Humans have the power to make the right choices and eliminate health risks by not falling for corporate marketing.
