Introduction
Teaching students need active and robust engagement strategies to achieve the primary goals of learning. Students cannot learn just by sitting and gazing in class. A teacher needs to use strategic measures and targets to make the high-level engagement of students. Kurniawati, De Boer, Minnaert and Mangunsong (2016) argued that incorporating various engagement strategies is critical to achieving the goals of education and help students pursue their goals. While some procedures, such as providing regular and timely feedback, may work for some students, the same approach may not work for other students. With the digital age and increased technological advancement, the use of modern technology has proved successful in engaging all students to succeed.
Game-based learning is not only a strategic method of engaging students, but it is also a method of drawing students' attention to an issue they often perceive as dull. Teaching mathematics through the use of game-based learning is both exciting and fun. Students find a lot of excitement in pursuing and trying to solve mathematical problems by using game-based applications that replicate mathematical formulas (Kurniawati et al., 2016). By using game-based learning, students can understand and follow on the provided methods through a game they play on integrated software that uses maths concepts.
Dispositions are professional beliefs, values, and attitudes that promote student learning. They are strategies that support and encourage learning and development in students. Teaching mathematics is very challenging, and any slight inappropriate behavior, attitude, or belief may discourage students from developing a positive attitude and enjoy learning the subject. Instilling the mood of enjoyment is very successful in teaching mathematics. It involves triggering positive emotions of fun and excitement. The disposition entails instilling a positive aura and mentality in the students, bringing forth interest, enthusiasm, motivation, and curiosity. It involves approaching the subject through joy, mindfulness, and fun. The disposition of fun and excitement is practical as it helps students develop and develop a positive attitude towards mathematics.
Student Reflecting on Their Learning
It is essential to help the student to reflect on their learning. One of the best ways to help students to reflect on their education is to allocate time at the end of the lesson to reflect on what they have learned (Kurniawati et al., 2016). One important strategy is to let them have an open group reflection. For example, a classroom of 30 students is split into five groups, each group comprising of six students. Each group is then given a task to reflect on and explore various approaches to the task. Each group member is then asked to have direct participation, observe and listen to others' experiences, learn from the experience, and summarize what they have learned in less than 200 words. By the use of the Curatr tool, each student takes self-time to reflect on the entire lesson and experience. One of the most important aspects of reflection is to accord each student "a self-time" to go over their learning experience and review what they have accumulated within the lesson.
The Use of Academic Language Instruction
The best and most effective strategy of promoting the use of academic language in instruction is through making a wall of words. Each word used during the lesson is then written down on a large paper and pinned on the wall. Through this, students are constantly reminded of what they have covered and learned across the disciplines. They are then urged to reflect on the words, check out their various meaning, and try to use them in different contexts.
