Introduction

A zombie is considered to be a fictitious character that is perceived to be developed as a result of science gone wrong, wild science experiments (EVANS, 2015). These fictitious characters have always captured the mind of scientists eliciting mixed responses from them. Majority of professionals in the field of science express their fears on what to do to escape the zombies in the event of an attack (Knippling & Savelli, 2010).

Preparations

Surviving a zombie attack requires prior preparation to determine ways by which an escape mechanism can be devised and executed. Preparations for zombies attack have been done in the form of simulations since these characters remain fictitious to date. For instance, research by a graduate at Cornell University, Alexander Alemi, entailed the creation of a zombie outbreak model scenario (Shiwnarain, 2018). The simulation was done on a large-scale basis which covered the United States of America in totality. The research was based on the four states of becoming a zombie which entail a human who is then infected by a pathogen, hence becoming a zombie and finally dies to become a dead zombie. During the infection state, the research team considered the walking pace of an infected zombie, how it spreads the infection to healthy human, and the rate of transfer of the pathogens to achieve an effective dose. The other factors of randomness were kept constant throughout the study.

The outbreak of a zombie attack was expected to start from anywhere within the United States. The scientists feared most the attack emancipating from a populated city as the infection would be spread rapidly within a short time as people are particularly close to each other. Response time to the infection would be limited; hence the spread of infection from one person to another would be difficult to contain (Shiwnarain, 2018). The rural areas stand a better chance of surviving an attack since the population is scarce, hence detection of the spread of infection is easier, and containment procedures will be effective. Sparse population in the rural areas decrease the spread of infection as contact time from one person to another is delayed. Residents in the rural setting would have sufficient time to prepare for the attack (Shiwnarain, 2018).

Surviving the Zombie Apocalypse

During an outbreak of a zombie attack, people are advised to move to less populated areas where they can seek refuge from the rest of the infected population. The shelter under which refuge is sought in has to be zombie-proof deterring access from the outside (Hurrle, 2013). Having means of communication with the outside world would be an added advantage as news about the apocalypse can be communicated. Caution is made preventing people to occupy common areas having less population as with time when people move to these areas they become populated.

A sufficient food reserve will be essential for the people seeking refuge from the rest of the infected population (Luethke, 2011). The zombie apocalypse is estimated and expected to last several years before it may be fully controlled. During the times of apocalypse, sufficient food storage will see the hidden people through this phase.

People may not alienate themselves for a long time without detection as mistakes culminating in the revealing of their hidden location may be possible. Therefore, it is advised to bring along potential weapons to facilitate protection of their well-being. Adequate ammunitions, knives, hacksaws, sledgehammer, and basic skills in martial arts, among others will enhance the security of the uninfected individuals from infection by the zombies (Frade, 2017).
