Majority of those who seek to be nurses are usually attracted by rewards nursing profession offers. Nurses have several chances daily to create a difference in people's lives and develop a personal connection with their client in the course of offering care to them. Nonetheless, like any other profession nursing profession have its shortcomings. Presently, the key threat to the nursing profession is a nursing shortage that has been attributed highly with an increase in the population of the aged individually globally.
Nursing is one of the professions that create a chance to influence positively in someone's life particularly their wellbeing. The chance usually leaves many nurses feeling happy and good, hence it is one of the rewards of nursing among many others. A normal day of a nurse is filled with long physical, emotional, and mental working hours (Rodrigue, Santos, & Sousa, 2017). The duties of a nurse differ from offering wellness education to healthy personal caring for hurt or unwell individuals to caring for patients as they face death. Intellectually, a nurse needs to be at the top of the game, prepared and equipped to the offer patient with quality care to prevent death and to serve more life from suffering at the worse moments health wise. It is often painful, and it breaks nurses emotionally seeing a patient dying knowing there did not offer their best, so nurses put many efforts of a daily routine to see everything runs swiftly. It is not an easy task but nurses have no choice but to offer the best care at the expense of theirs. Despite long and busy working days, nurses are able to take a rest knowing that their caring touch and kind service really has an impact on someone' health with whom they offered services.
Nursing as a profession offers one a chance to associate and relate with other human beings at an individual level, close and warmly association in patients and their family members is rewarding. It is a symbol of trust and respect from the patients being served. Majority of clients are susceptible frequently in conditions that are painful and hard to handle to give them proper care, nurses usually need to create a rapport to asserts the client that they truly care about their(patient) health and nurses key role is to ensure patients recovery as soon as possible. Nurses demonstrate care not only by putting emphasizes on patients physical needs but also by spending quality time with clients and taking time to comprehend the wants and wishes of the client and their family and friends. Due to these close connection nurses develop, is the primary reason they had to choose to become nurses.
Nothing that has its positive side misses a negative side. Nursing like other profession is faced in many challenges that need solutions. In the 21st century, the nursing profession faces a crisis that put the health outcome of the patient at risk, currently; the nursing profession is facing a shortage. This is in the because of the need for more health caregivers. This matter is attributed to the fact that nursing universities and colleges across America are having a difficult time to upsurge their intake rate to attain the need for more professional nurses (Marc, et al., 2019). Below are facts to attest that the nursing profession is facing a severe shortage. As per the report documented by Dr. Peter Burhaus and his colleges from American Association of Colleges of Nursing(AANC) , the desire more nurses increases by 2 to 3% annually and by 2025 this upsurge in demand for more nurses will result in a shortage of about a half a million by 2025 (Snavely, 2016). The statement implies that at least 30, 000 extra nurses needs to graduate annually to realize the demand numbers of nurses. This is an upsurge of 30% more than the current number of nursing students gradually every year. Besides, the Bureau of Labor Statistics asserts than over one million new and substitute nurses will be needed by 2016. According to Snavely (2016), experts forecast that an increment of 587,000 new positions will be produced by 2016 that is equivalent to increase of 23.5% higher than the prior years.
Because of the shortage, nursing profession experiences a problem known as nurse burnout. As the shortage persists, nurses workforce is facing greater workloads leading to shorter hospital stays, fewer support resources, and, rising average patient perception. Shortage in nurses is linked to burnout and job dissatisfaction, pioneers to voluntary turnover, which leads to the understaffing of nurses in hospitals and compromised patient outcomes. Approximately 40% of hospitals staff nurses say they plan to leave their jobs within 1 year (Logdeet al., 2018). Patients as the primary threats to patient safety rank shortage of nurses and the overwork of health workers in health care facilities. Therefore, the nursing shortage is affecting the quality of patient care and putting a lot of weight on the healthcare organization. The best solution is to prevent the problem from enlarging. To assist prevents this; the healthcare organization should review and update their internal policies for productivity and advise to employ better the leading-edge technology in this regard. Nonetheless, this suggestion will not work for all the health care facilities, and some facilities are employing robots to conduct some responsibilities of the nurses to ease out their workload.
Besides, employing technology, healthcare organizations need to comprehend the significance of enhancing diversity in the nursing workforce. By enhancing diversity in the nursing profession, patient satisfaction is improved. One approach to do this is to balance the present talent force with clinically and culturally trained international nurse. This way, the healthcare facilities will have access to seasoned nurses with plenty of experience.
Though the nursing profession is demanding, it needs a lot of hard work, nurses profession is rewarding by offering a nurse with the opportunity to bring a positive effect to lives of those undergoing pain due to sickness, establishing trusting associations with other individuals through carting and connecting. Nursing profession presently is facing shortage that but nurses workforce into problems such as nurse burnout and job dissatisfaction that needs to be addressed before the quality of patient satisfaction is affected seriously.
