Introduction

As children grow up, they always identify themselves with someone that they desire to be like when they grow up. The majority of these people are iconic figures in the economy or a particular industry. These kinds of people are referred to as role models. They are capable of influencing the behaviors and ways of doing things by those who look upon them. Therefore, like a Heath Science Student, I am always attempting to find exemplary people that have been successful in the Medicine field to look upon them as role models. It is because Medicine is my dream, and I desire to be one kind of doctor who is wholeheartedly dedicated to her work. The likes of Dr. Nadine fit my choice of the person I am searching for because her story is very inspiring. Dr. Nadine is the first female in the First Nation community who attended medical school and became one of the top surgeons in Canada. She says that she was shocked to become the first indigenous female who graduated in 1997 from a medical school. However, Nadine makes it clear that being first is not something positive or special to celebrate but the failure of education to aid indigenous students to reach their desired levels. Thus, her accomplishment was out of hard work and self-dedication in her studies. Her success, determination, hard work, and self-dedication are what inspire me most in my Medicine field. This paper will go through her journey and how she became a remarkable example for not only the Native Canadians but for thousands of students in Health Science degree, including me.

Family Background as the Sources of Her Strong Values

1970 was the year when Nadine Caron was born in Kamloops, British Columbia. She grew up in the same place and in a family that took education seriously. It is sociologically proven that a child's personality is mostly influenced by the environment and people she grew up associating within her life. Dr. Nadine acquired strong values from her mother, who was a teacher. Her mother was an Anishnawbe from the Sagamok First Nation, and as many other Indigenous people at that period, she grew on a reserve within Ontario with her family. Nadine Caron schooled in a residential school where he graduated and became the first person from her reserve to pursue her post-graduate studies. She asserts that her mother gave her a great deal of strength. Her parents made it vivid for her that the key to success is only education (Russell, 2017). Dr. Nadine's family background resembles my family background a lot. I am from an immigrant family, and my parents care about my education more than anything else. My mother is a gynecologist that had so many educational and social barriers before she reaches her goal in Medicine. Therefore, the same as Nadine's mother being her source of inspiration; I also view my mother as my role model and the source of my strength to keep moving.

Education and Academic Career

Nadine Caron has firmly set a strong academic background as a root of her leadership success. Dr. Caron enrolled for her undergraduate studies at Simon Fraser University, where he completed her Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology. At the University, she was a star basketball player who won many awards, comprising of the Shrum Gold Medal and the top undergraduate student ("ENCORE: Meet Dr. Nadine Caron, Canada's first female First Nations surgeon | CBC Radio," 2016). It is vivid that just from undergraduate education and experience; she had exemplary qualities for him to become a leader. A good leader is one who can lead people to success path, and the achievement must start with you. Dr. Nadine accomplished a lot in her education, setting the right track pace towards a successful leader. Also, while finishing her MD that she pursued at the University of British Columbia, she was once more recognized as the top-ranked student. She has also completed an MA within Public Health from Harvard. Caron is a post-graduate fellowship at California University, San Francisco, majoring in Endocrine Surgical Oncology. Therefore, Nadine Caron is a leader because to lead people, you need to be well-educated and informed, and this is quite excellent on her side because she has fully equipped herself with adequate knowledge. Moreover, a leader is one who leads people to a path of success through determination and hard work. From what can be seen, Dr. Nadine has accomplished a lot in his education journey out of commitment and resilience, something that makes him the best leader.

Caron Challenges

In one of Nadine Caron's speeches famous as "The Other Side of "Being First" by TEDxUNBC, she talks about how she felt happy and sad at the same when Caron realized she is the first indigenous woman ("Dr. Nadine Caron TEDxUNBC," 2017). The reason for being sad might be that she knew people would have higher expectation on her to deal with the factors that are eliminating other kids to reach her level. Therefore, this instills her fear of what could happen if he fails to leave by their expectations. She also encounters in her life the challenge of balancing all the roles and activities she is entitled to that see Dr. Nadine travel often for presentations and conferences, spending weekends editing and writing research projects, as well as working long hours. In regards to her nature of being a woman, it is more likely that she has ever felt like quitting (Padmos, 2016). However, the truth is that she would not desire to give up any of the roles and activities. The quality of perseverance makes her an exemplary leader. Since a good leader needs to be a person who is capable of functioning successfully under pleasure and Caron has proven her capability.

Ground Experience

Since January 2005, Nadine Caron has been serving at Prince George Regional Hospital as the General and Endocrine Surgeon. She has been working at UBC'S Faculty of Medicine as the tenure-track faculty member within the Department of surgery and training in the Northern Medical Program (Padmos, 2016). Dr. Nadine has served many committees consisting of the Ministry of Health, the Province of British Columbia, British Columbia Medical Association, and the Native Physicians Association of Canada. Presently, she is the BC Medical Association's Committee Chair on Aboriginal Health. On this basis, it can be drawn that she is genuinely a leader, having served in several committees as a member as well as being a Chair. Also, the experiences of serving in those committees have instilled her with adequate leadership skills, including interpersonal and others. For instance, as the committee chair, she has learned how to manage and coordinate other people.

Today, Dr. Nadine Caron serves in Prince George, B.C., and a place where her interest for her patients and the medical practice is evident. Every time she enters a room before carrying out the surgery, she instantly puts her patients at effortlessness with her calm competence and cheery greetings. It is for this reason that people will choose to rather drive for more than 17 hours only to come and see her and not one else because of the type of care Caron offers. Dr. Nadine is not only a physician but also an innovator and teacher. She teaches with the Northern British Columbia's medical school University. Her ardor for rural Medicine has seen her focus more on how to bring comprehensive care and inclusion within Medicine to patients located in the North. She recently started spearheading a new inventiveness, The Northern Biobank, a first within North America ("University of Northern British Columbia," 2016). What makes her my role model and a hero to me, I mean an everyday hero, is because she is performing so many things at the same time. For instance, in the federal government, Dr. Nadine is on several boards, she serves incredibly hard, and still, she is also within her clinic as well as the operating room each week.

As a Role Model and Mentor

Dr. Nadine Caron actively serves as a youth mentor and role model, including me. As a mentor, she has regularly devoted her time to speak to the youth and medical students and aids guide them. Also, Caron works together with aboriginal youth as Johns Hopkins University Visions Quest Program's part (Russell, 2017). As a role model, she is a hero to everyone. Starting with me, I am fascinated by her hard work, determination, and what Dr. Caron has managed to achieve, considering is a woman. She has proven that what a man can do a woman can even do better.

Conclusion

It is vivid from the discussion that every kid tends to relate or look upon specific iconic figures in society to be their role model. As a Health Science Student, I am always attempting to find exemplary people that have been successful in the Medicine field to look upon them as role models, and I choose Dr. Nadine Caron. I desire her hard work, determination, resilience, and perseverance in everything she undertakes. Her family background has been the origin of her strong values, especially her mum. Dr. Nadine's parents have empowered her that the only key to success was education. Dr. Nadine's family background resembles my family background a lot. I am from an immigrant family, and my parents care about my studies more than anything else. Therefore, I choose to focus on her because she portrays the woman whom a desire to be when I am at her age.

Caron experiences the challenge of balancing the many roles and activities that she accountable for, and she is not willing to quit hence proving his capability as a leader to work comfortably under pressure. Finally, Dr. Nadine Caron actively serves as a youth mentor and role model, including me.
