Introduction
High quality and cost-efficient medical services are essential elements in healthcare systems. Most of, these elements are achieved through inter-profession collaborations and efficient management of operations. However, despite the efforts, healthcare facilities continue to face numerous challenges including medical mistakes, drug safety inconsistencies, fragmented delivery service, constraints form the information systems, and disorganization are among the issues affecting the efficiency and quality of healthcare quality. nevertheless, major healthcare facilities are investing in high-quality health information management professional and technology departments to facilitate the management of the institution's data and validate as well as organize here information in a way that it will promote high-quality healthcare services and eradicates some of the barriers to an efficient healthcare system. thus the HIM/HIT perform the following functions:
Data Collection and Organization
The first and major role played by the information management department is collecting all necessary data that have an influence on the quality, efficiency and smooth operations of the healthcare system. such information as the number of patients, number of staff, their different post, drug and medication records, patient's information and other vital information are all collected and organized by the information management department (AHIMA, 2011).
Data Governance
Data governance involves developing frameworks and structures that enforce the use of the information to train, audit, educate, and encourage compliance from across the professions. Data governance also involves developing an inventory of the organization's resources for the application in daily operations and decision-making activities (AHIMA, 2011).
Maintaining Effective Information Flow
The information department in collaboration with the technology department plays a critical role in managing the flow of information from one department to the other and from individual to another. The information management department is the central "pillar' for effective communication especially in situations where multiple departments are involved (AHIMA, 2011).
Data Systems Maintenance
In a world dominated by technology, most often healthcare systems have integrated their information systems with modern technology. Thus, a significant number of healthcare facilities have advanced information storage systems that require regular maintenance. The health information management professional is responsible for maintaining these systems and ensuring that the stored information is only accessible to the authorized personnel only (AHIMA, 2011).
