Introduction
E-cigarettes (vape) have gained popularity in recent years. Vaping devices include a mouthpiece and cartridge that contains a vaping liquid, heater, and a battery. It is advertised as the new and safest way of smoking cigarettes. Both young and old people smoke electronic cigarettes. Smokers of cigarettes who wish to quit have shifted to e-cigarettes because they believe that its dangers are less. However, these people who vape are unaware of its dangers. Vaping is bad because it affects the health of the brain, results in gum disease, and can lead to cancer.
Vaping and its Impact on Brain Health
Vaping is bad because it interferes with the brain function. Batelli (p.6) affirms that the addictive substance contained in the vape is addictive and it affects young people's brain. According to the author, the developing brain is vulnerable to addictive substances. Besides, the author mentions that nicotine interferes with brain development, cognitive functioning, and an increase in mental health issues in later stages of life. More so, Spector (p.1) affirms that vaping is not different because e-cigarettes contain nicotine. Also, the New York Center for Living (p.14) points out that besides addiction, nicotine has various effects on the body, which include impulse control, attention deficit, and mood disorders. Furthermore, Callahan-Lyon (p.37) affirms that e-cigarettes pose a high risk of nicotine toxicity because of its high levels present in the cartridges. Undeniably, vaping is bad for the developing brain because of the effects of high exposures of nicotine in the body.
Vaping and the Risk of Gum Disease
Gum disease can occur when an individual is vaping. New York Center for Living (p.14) indicates that teenage vapers often complained of bloody mouth sores. For that reason, Irfan Rahman, a toxicologist at the University of Rochester, investigated the dangers of vaping on mouth cells. According to his final report, vapors inflame mouth cells and promote gum disease and tooth loss. Furthermore, the report indicated that the vapors made it more difficult for these mouth sores to heal. Besides, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, Health and Medicine Division, Board on Population Health and Public Health Practice, Committee on the Review of the Health Effects of Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems (p.455) supports the point that vaping results in periodontal disease. They affirm that the tobacco smoke interferes with the oral microbiota, which results in severe gum disease.
Vaping and Its Association With Cancer
Vaping is bad because it can cause cancer. New York Center for Living (p.9) points out that the vapor in the electronic cigarettes contains carcinogens and heavy metals that can be cancerous to the body. The organization notes that a 2013 study by the University of California found that vaping is bad because of the exposure to heavy metals and silicates in the vapors produced by the liquids. As it explains further, these metal particles come from the heating element and are picked up by the liquid and carried to the lungs in the aerosol. Furthermore, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, Health and Medicine Division, Board on Population Health and Public Health Practice, Committee on the Review of the Health Effects of Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems indicates that e-cigarettes cause cancer because of the lesions in the carcinogen pathway.
Overall, vaping is bad because of the reasons mentioned above. Particularly, underage vapors face the high risk of developing complications because of their underage brain. Even though studies indicate that vaping is an alternative to smoking, the complications mentioned above are dire. It is important for people to understand that vaping is bad for their health.
