Every weekend, there is a war that rages between my body and my mind. While the mind is always willing to engage in the activity, my body jerks at the realization of the pain and trouble that awaits it at the gym. At exactly two in the afternoon every Saturday and Sunday, I don my armor that comprises sports shoes, a sleeveless shirt, and shorts and head to the gym. Looking at me, one would see a world gymnastic champion in the making. I then put my headphones and enter the gym, ready for a four-hour workout.
The gym room is a beehive of activities with different people stretching their muscles, some running, and others jogging. Others do pushups while others stretch different parts of their body. In the gym, bright industrial lights dangle from the gypsum ceiling, and the air is filled with a pungent smell of sweat and hums of people going about their activities. While there are many activities that one can participate in, I prefer lifting the dumbbells first to keep my muscles in control. I sit down on the bench and get hold of the metal bar that has two dumbbells at its ends. I start with the smaller one pound dumbbells and lift them ten times before adding some more weight. The sweat from the previous occupant rents the air, but this does not derail me in any way as I am also aware that I will leave a similar sweat behind.
A quick glance at the gym room exposes paraphernalia of tools and equipment which are useful in the gym. There are basic free weight machines, benches, dumbbells, and squat racks. There is also a large cable machine that stands in the middle of the room. Beside it are chest machines, and Hammers use to strengthen the shoulders. Just a few meters from where I sit are two treadmills of different colors. One of them is silver, while the other one has a dark sheen with a few white spots on its sides. Close to this are elliptical chines, stair masters, and abdominal machines.
The floor is well tiled with floor tiles that match the wall tiles. Once one is in here, he or she is met with the atmosphere that encourages them to spend as much time as possible trying on different equipment. Sweat droplets, the product of extraneous exercises, make the floor shine like a mirror placed against the sun. Above the wall tiles are mirrors that are fitted all around the room that give them room a heavenly ambiance. After a period lifting the dumbbells, I head left to the adjacent room that was equipped with leg machines. Here, I intend to perform some leg workouts since the dumbbells worked a lot on the chest and the arms. The leg machines here are arranged exquisitely, making it easy for one to choose their machine of choice. They include calf machines, leg extension machines, leg press machines, and leg curl machines.
Having done my afternoon’s workout, I jog out of the room feeling tired and nursing some muscle aches. However, I am glad since it is through that pain that I am able to keep my body fit. With Saturday gone, I wait for Sunday to complete the weekend in the usual style.
