Required Questions

(answer EVERY question in this section)

Describe your career path to your current position. Include information about education and experiences. First of all, the position of NCIM is a managerial position which for one to occupy, has to possess good practical experience in the field of nursing and good education background in the specific area. In the nursing school, I had interest in Nursing Informatics, and so I pursued it at the undergraduate level. After graduation, I started as a clinical nurse and practiced for six years. During this time, I also helped at the information technology department. I was then appointed the deputy manager in the Clinical Information department for two years before becoming the manager.

Discuss the value of best evidence as a driving force in delivery of nursing care at your facility. In the ancient times, nursing activities used to be based on trial and error and decisions favored those that worked. In the end, medical errors used to arise, some which were very fatal (LoBiondo-Wood, & Haber, 2017). In our facility, we have our operations based on research results. We must provide the best medical care to our patients. So we always formulate standard operation procedures based experimental and research findings. Our patients always give us feedback, and they feel happy with our practice.

What safeguards and decision-making support tools are embedded in patient care technologies and information systems that support safe practice at your facility? First of all, Nursing Informatics is based on the ability to obtain data, knowledge, and information, analyze them, process them and share them. Our hospital, therefore, has a working system that once we have obtained patient information which includes biography, medical history, and social history, we feed them into our computers for analysis and storage. We have a team of competent medical personnel comprised of all the healthcare professionals who help with the analysis. For patient confidentiality, we also have security levels. Therefore, only qualified staff members can obtain certain information about a particular patient.

Tell me about patient care technologies that have improved patient care at your facility. Technology has gained popularity in the healthcare sector because of its ability to save time ensuring timely treatment and also preventing medical errors. The first simple technology that our facility adopted is the electronic health record (EHR). This technology allows us to have all the data of our patients, process them and feed them into our systems (Kennedy & Moen, 2017). So during our clinical ward rounds, we quickly access the information we need and proceed with the patient care that applies. Another way in which technology has helped is in the bedding system, though it is equipment advancement, it has also made patient care easier. Our new beds are adjustable remotely to the desired level that the patient requires for comfortable.

There is also an improvement in our delivery catheters. The new ones are faster and are more efficient.

What groups of healthcare workers rely on you to collect high quality information/data and how is that information utilized? Almost all the healthcare professionals rely on our information, but the more frequent ones are the Medical doctors and the pharmacists. The doctors use our patient data and medical information to help them in coming up with the best treatment and to prescribe the relevant drugs. The pharmacists use the information for patient consultation and drug administration.

Optional Questions

(answer only ONE question from the choices below)

Please tell me what challenges you have faced in dealing with other disciplines who may not understand the needs of nurses/nursing? Please share an example of how garbage in/garbage out (GIGO) impacted a decision related to your information/data collection. Please give me an example of how the lack of interprofessional collaboration impacted your role. Please describe what a typical day on the job is like for you? As a nurse, my job is always patient care in the best way possible. Now with the additional role as information manager. I feel I can help further. My first job as the manager is to make sure that all the patient information from my team are up-to-date and that they have the desired accuracy. I then have to make sure that there is a working mechanism through which the other professionals can get the information they require from us. And finally, I must make sure that the in-patients records that are required by the clinical nurses are readily available.

Follow-up Questions

(Answer all of these. Please do not ask them during the interview.

Instead, reflect and answer them afterwards.)

How will completing this interview impact your practice as a BSN-prepared nurse? Give specific examples.
