Introduction

Prostate cancer occurs in the prostate. It is common cancer that occurs among men and advances in stages. The initial growth is confined within the prostate glands, a place where it is unlikely to cause serious harm. Such kind of growth may require minimal or no treatment, but in other cases, the growth may be aggressive and characterized by the quick spread. A concern is, however, pegged on the reluctance of men to health care screening, for example, undertaking a prostrate exam. As such, the paper seeks to summarize an article that offers suggestions for clinicians to overcome the reluctance of their patients to acquire screening.

Methods Used in the Article

The article primarily looks at the attitude of men towards prostate cancer based on a systematic review of qualitative studies. The article recognizes that screening for prostate cancer is conventional, but concerns about its limitations outweigh the benefits, perhaps a reason why men find it difficult for consideration. As noted earlier, thematic synthesis and systematic review of qualitative studies on the perspective of men towards cancer screening were considered. A search on different electronic databases until 2016 was also considered to ensure the accuracy of references made (Plos One, 2017). There was also a consideration of screening by age, family history of prostate cancer, and ethnicity.

Findings

The findings revealed that the reluctance among young men was attributed to by the thought that they anchored little knowledge about the risks of prostate cancer and, as such, saw the screening as something that did not concern their age. They associated it with old age. African American men who are equally at a higher risk of getting prostate cancer avoided the screening on the ground of having less knowledge towards it and its associated costs (Plos One, 2017). On the positive dimension, men who had family history on the disease were noted to be aware of its consequences and, as such, were motivated to undertake the screening. The article also informs that the reluctance of men was informed by their fear of contemplating death. They were also anxious about uncertainties and unknowns associated with the screening procedure.

Discussions

The findings from the article demonstrate that the reluctance in prostate cancer screening among men is pegged to a person’s subjective norm. They should realize that screening is essential for early cancer treatment and also to acquire reassurance about their health. As such, clinicians must join hands in ensuring that they overcome their reluctance to have the screening done. Their (clinicians) recommendation is a significant contributor to decisions regarding prostate cancer screening. As such, they must ensure the proper and convincing performance of pre-screening discussions to educate men on the benefits associated with the screening. Adequate and accurate pre-screening discussions will empower men and ensuring that they make better decisions that inform their priorities, values, and preferences.

Conclusion

In summary, the reluctance of men’s perspective towards prostate cancer screening as elucidated by the article is influenced by numerous issues, as noted herein. The article asserts that young people believe that they are young, and the condition is associated with old age. Black Americans who are also at a higher risk of getting the condition also attach cost, among other issues, as discussed. The clinician must, therefore, conduct proper and convincing pre-screening discussions to empower men in making informed decisions.
