Introdution
Female infertility refers to when a woman is not able to conceive after the 12 months of regularly unprotected coitus. Some causes of infertility are treatable while those are not treatable can be managed through assisted conception, adoption or surrogacy (Eniola, Adetola, & Abayomi, 2017). The following is an article review by Eniola, Adetola, and Abayomi (2017) on the potential treatment and psychosocial impact of infertility.
Potential Treatment
There are various possible treatment methods for infertility. Short-term counseling is essential. According to Eniola, Adetola, and Abayomi (2017), the patient goes through counselling before the receiving infertility treatment. Specific psychotherapy, especially interpersonal therapy is vital to give relief to patients suffering from depression. Cognitive behavioral therapies try to manipulate the unhealthy pattern of thoughts of depression and anxiety. Ovulating women with patent tubes can undergo artificial insemination through intra-cervical Gonadotropin can be used to induce ovulation. As a result, pregnancy has eased the patients and thus giving relief to those suffering from mild to moderate depression. In regards to stress management, relaxation techniques such as deep breathing and yoga play a significant role. Drugs that reduce weight in infertile women can be used to restore their reproductive functions. Additionally, antidepressants and anti-anxiety medications are also considered helpful, since they are used to control depression and stress-related infertility.
Psychosocial Impacts
Infertility is a stressful situation for the victims and therefore has psychosocial impacts, depression, and anxiety being the significant resultants of infertility. Other ddepression and anxiety factors include financial concerns, medical side effects, and treatment outcome uncertainties. Also, emotional reaction is another factor; they include frustration, shock, low self-esteem, grief, and depression. As a result, an individual's relationship with partner or family possibly gets ruined. With regards to medication side effects, hormone, and drug used in treating infertility produce various psychological side effects. Sleep interruptions, irritability in women, anxiety and mood swings are among the side effects related to the medications. Other medications might cause thinking problems, depression and mania. Furthermore, the problem might affect the choices and outcomes of an individual regarding parenting surrogacy (Eniola, Adetola, & Abayomi, 2017). Women who are infertile therefore become anxious whether they will be ever able to get children in their lives.
