Ever since I was a child, I always had the passion of helping people by doing things that would help save a life in one way or another. I have been exposed to different life experiences in my home country Russia before moving to the United States to further my dream of saving lives. In any society, there is nothing that blesses souls than going out of your way to put a smile on someone’s face in the simplest of ordinary possible ways that many people take for granted.
Since my graduation in 1996 with a Bachelors's and Master’s degree in science (WES certified): Accounting, from Oryol State University of Economics (Russia), I have gained experience in different lines of work, particularly accounting and finance. However, with time, I have noticed that I need to do more towards my goal and passion for saving lives. This made me realize that I am truly passionate about healthcare and the pharmaceutical field. With this, I went further in 2017 to pursue an Associate Degree in Health Science, which further enhanced my experience and the overall drive towards healthcare. This is after being a fulltime mother for eight years, which brought out a different aspect of my life, the need to go out and spend time with those who have no one looking after them.
My choice of program is enhanced by the massive experience gained during my twelve months Cancer Advocacy volunteer at Patient Alliance, LLC- Philadelphia. I had a chance to practice different administrative functions, especially coordinate patient advocacy meetings/events, prepare cancer outreach materials, and other finance activities. During this period, I was able to intermarry my previous experience in accounting and finance with healthcare and fight for cancer patients' well-being. Spending time with cancer patients and or the affected countries taught me one great lesson: there are so many things that we consider so obvious and take for granted, including the ability to wake up in the morning without any pathology and continue with our daily routines.
I choose Drexel University because of the reputation and high ranking in Philadelphia as one of the best universities in health sciences. This is despite the COVID-19 pandemic, which is the reason why I lost my permanent job as a quality assurance/compliance coordinator at Serenity Homecare, where I played a significant role in ensuring the provision of high-quality home-based patient care. I will get the best exposure and experience at Drexel through interaction with different healthcare experts.
The year 2019 was not my favorite, especially after a divorce that spoiled all my plans. However, I have not given up on my passion or myself because I have many people looking up to me, especially my child, who gives me a reason to smile and be healthy. The experience from the divorce gave me an opportunity of realizing that, at some point, we all need someone to talk to, an attribute that many people take for granted.
Conclusion
The world is faced with, among other challenges, increasing antimicrobial resistance hence the need for advanced disease control measures, mainly emulating the One-Health approach to disease management and control. Thus, I decided that I have to improve my passion through professional development to master all the skills needed to gain more confidence in the health sciences and the pharmaceutical industry.
