What are Adam’s rights in this situation? What support could you provide to Adam at this time?

Adam has a right to say what he is feeling and thinking about his father, which will be used to understand why he does not want to speak with his father. Adam has a right to know his family, which will be possible if he meets with his father. Adam’s father, David, lives interstates; hence Adam does not get enough time to be with his father. As a carer, I would support Adam by encouraging him to meet with his father and tell him about the AOD problem. I would talk to David and let him know about counseling programs and meetings that Adam will be enrolled in to help with his drug problem, and judging his son will not help Adam is trying to battle. As Adam’s resident carer, I would support him emotionally by actively listening to his thoughts and ideas, giving assurance about life being better without any drug and substance use, and giving advice about life problems and solutions.

What referral to support services/programs to encourage/ provide social support for Adam would be appropriate at this time?

The two effective support programs that will help Adam to deal with his drug problem are Youth Withdrawal and Respite Program, which offers supervised care for youths who require low medical withdrawal (Malvaso & Delfabbro, 2016). The second program that I would recommend is a residential Rehabilitation program that offers a supportive and structured environment to enable youth transitions back to the community.

What ethical/legal responsibilities would you have in this interaction?

It is my ethical responsibility to assist Adam in maintaining contact with his family; therefore, when Adam meets his father, their bond will strengthen, which will reduce Adam’s behavior of running away to his mother. It is also my responsibility to develop a productive working relationship and maintain good communication with Adam by giving him advice and assurance. This process will be considered as a counseling session which will help Adam with his drug use problem. Having a working relationship with clients helps them feel comfortable, and it will become easier to open up about their problems, thoughts, and plans for building their future.
