Introduction
Research is a process that carefully analyzes a specific problem or a detailed study of a particular issue. Specific tools such as science are often used to accomplish a research process. Therefore research is done on IT, medical, non-medical, and anything else of concern (Jacobsen, 2020). The first process in conducting an investigation is knowing the topic or problem to be researched. There is an important question in the topic that is supposed to be answered by the research. In this paper, I would be looking at the challenges that I faced when performing an environmental scan in a neighborhood to identify the health and social facilities.
In a clinical meeting held, my team and I were divided into groups by the clinical supervisor to perform research of a neighborhood. The part that I was given is investigating the social and health services that can be found inside the community. These social and health services included: hospitals, doctors' offices, dentists, emergence rooms, eye clinics, and shelters.
After a while, I started encountering problems in getting accurate data mainly because my approach was wrong from the beginning. The method that I used at the beginning of the research was that I generalized my information instead of breaking up my study to identify and elaborate on all the essential fields (Jacobsen, 2020). The second issue I noticed was that I lacked comprehensive background knowledge on research methodologies, which could have guided me in the research.
Feeling
At the beginning of my research, I thought that it would be easy to get information about the study from the neighborhood. Due to a lack of background knowledge on conducting research, I went on and generalized all the information, which led me to challenges later on. I felt being bogged down by the extensive data from the analysis. Firstly I felt the study was a bit complex because of the wrong methodology I used.
I was unable to select a field site for the research, and also gaining access to these sites was challenging. Also, the collection of data from the area was a bit difficult for me because I was unable to gain trust with my recruits (Kumar, 2019). Secondly, due to the lack of extensive background data of research methodologies, I failed in understanding the subject concern concerning the topic and lacked the research guidance. From these challenges, I felt very challenged as a nursing student and researched getting information from the environmental study, which later I used. I noticed a significant improvement when I divided my work into smaller parts.
Evaluation
After I changed my methods of research, I was able to overcome the challenges that I was facing. I divided my work into sections whereby I started by identifying my research model, which was in a field study in this case. Then I choose the sampling method, which helps me to sample the test case site individuals from the entire neighborhood so that I can identify their level of education and also their health status conditions.
The next module I worked on was getting the best data collection methods, which are quantitative, qualitative, or both of the two ways. I ended up using the qualitative approach which included activities such as surveys, observations, and polls (Jacobsen, 2020). Finally, I analyzed the collected data to obtain the required data.
Analysis
Form my experience. I notice that most of the undergraduate students who are in their final year in universities or colleges are faced with the problem when writing their proposals or doing their project research. From the study, I developed questions such as "Did this experience challenged me alone or most of the students ? ", "How do other students who study English as a secondary language coupe up with such problems." According to professional remarks, students from all kinds of fields should learn the fundamental study of research and deal with these problems in their early school life.
Action Plan
I have learned important information from experience, which I will now be using if presented with another yet research problem. I have arranged my goals so much that in a similar case, first I would summarize my study topic so that I get the essential factors which will be related to the data collection method, the targeted population, the size of the samples, the methodologies to be used, the sample size or location for the research, the tools required either new, modified or already existing and finally the expected duration for the study would take. The second step is to identify and summarize the challenge that I encounter during data collection and yet analyze the data collected and record it in a way they can be easily represented.
Conclusion
In summary, most of the undergraduate students doing their final projects face writing their proposals, identifying their research topic, and conducting their research. Most school programs have not included the study of research as a shared topi to their learning program. Research is not a simple problem as most students view it, and that it contains more than it seems, therefore, requires to be considered as one of the necessary knowledge a student needs before he or she graduates from campus I would recommend that the education board should help students to deal with the research problems in their early years in school.
