Hammer Attorneys (n.d.), offers an insight to readers on the necessary steps to take in case of a crash. Some of the steps needed to be made by both the witnesses and people involved in an accident entail as ensuring that everyone is okay, calling for help, collecting relevant information through pictures and hiring an accident attorney. As much as the article offers insight vital to most people close to accident scenes, its content is more of an advertising piece rather than an educating one on what should be done in such scenarios. According to Hammer Attorneys (n.d.), while calling for help, the victims of the accident should not be moved unless they are at grave danger and in need of assistance. The article is more of promotional content rather than offering insight into what should be done at an accident scene.
From the course, I have learned that advocating for not moving the victim is not the best solution after an accident occurrence. The first thing is to check the airway to determine if the victim is breathing. Breathing is necessary for the person to remain alive. Letting the victim remain still and calling for help may prolong the victims suffering resulting in immediate death. I would tilt the head of the individual back gently then lift their chin and put my check by the victim's mouth to determine whether he/she is breathing. Additionally, I will also check their chest to for the up and down movement. If the victim is unconscious, I will administer a hands-only CPR instantly to restore the respiratory and circulatory functions. I would place the heel of my hand on the breastbone of the victim's chest and interlock the two hands placed on top of each other. I would ensure my shoulders are above my hands and using my body weight I would press six centimeters down on his or her chest. I would then release the compression to allow the chest to revert its original position. Then repeat the compressions for 100-120 times till the help arrives (Gupta, Dantu, & Dantu, 2014). Then I will move the victim to safety.
However, the only instance where I would keep the victim as still as possible is there is a noticeable injury(s) that may require sophisticated handling such as bandaging, broken bones. Also, the victim can be kept still if there is a surety that is helpful is not far. Apart from merely restricting movement, I would pack a set of soft materials such as clothing to prevent movement of the broken bones or the spine and use the others to apply pressure to the injury to stop further bleeding. If possible, I would elevate the pressure to reading at chest level to reduce blood pressure. Such accidents may also put the victim in shock. Therefore, if the victim shows signs of paleness, I would unbutton tight clothing, talk to the victim calmly and ask them to put pressure on the hurt area. Additionally, I would raise the victim's legs (if not broken or badly hurt) and rest them on my knees to prevent shock.
The article, therefore, covers the legal obligations of the person involved in an accident while neglecting the ethical and human roles at the scene. If engaged in such an emergency the priority should be to increase the chances of survival of the victims.
