Introduction
When putting down the job description for the director of engineering position, Ray should include various things. The education level of the applicant and one should have a master's degree in Engineering or Computer Science. The applicants with Ph.D. levels should be also be offered an opportunity and considered first. The applicant should also have an experience of more than three years which makes them aware of what they are expected to do after being hired. The communication skills required for the director should also be added, and they should be both verbal and written. The director will be a leader which means he has to be able to pass messages correctly. Technology and software knowledge will be required since the director will be using computers in running the engineering department.
"A suitable candidate will also demonstrate skills in emerging human-computer interfaces, for example, Oculus, Kinect, and so forth. He will be additionally skilled in the development of consumer sites/software/applications through C, Objective C, C++, C#, or Java."
What types of questions should be covered when Ray interviews job candidates?
Some of the questions will be general while others will be related to engineering. Some of the questions that Ray should consider are: give an example of an engineering challenge situation and how you addressed it. How can you handle difficult clients when faced with them? How can you apply analytical problems in solving some common problems such as an increase in the cost of production in the company? What makes you stand out from other applicants?
"Tell me about the most challenging engineering project that you have been involved with during the past year? Describe the most challenging written technical report or presentation that you've had to complete? Describe an experience with a difficult client. How did you handle the situation? What would you have done differently?"
How would the interview questions change if the property was much larger than Ray's 600-room property? Much smaller?
If the property were larger than that of Ray, the interview questions would concentrate on a larger environment. The questions would help establish how the candidates would contribute to the sustainability of the business as well as increasing productivity at lower costs. Since the business would be operating at a large business, then the questions would involve how the applicant would improve in the company so that it can be more competitive. Other questions would concentrate on sustainable production methods such as emergency efficiency, implementation of effective technology and maintenance of equipment.
If the business were smaller than 600-room property, the scope of the questions would also be reduced. The questions would concentrate on daily problems such as repairing and maintenance of the facility equipment, ensuring satisfaction of the clients, and productivity enhancement.
In addition to Ray, who should be involved in the interview process? What are their likely concerns?
The owner of the restaurant- ensuring that the best applicant is hired for the welfare of the business
Finance director- to make sure all financial documents are taken on time.
Facility manager-to ensure that the applicant will possess maintenance and repair skills
Human resource manager- will check on diversity skills, managing style, former experience, and educational background
Production manager- will make sure that the applicant has skills on improving production and same time reducing cost
Research and development manager- will ensure that the applicant is able to conduct research on their own to improve production strategies
