This is mainly because as a professional nurse, I would have the trust of patients, I would understand the best practices in the nursing field, and I would treat patients with the compassion and kindness that they deserve. I have always derived satisfaction from improving the lives of people around me. This is what prompted me to take this path in life. However, in the years I have practiced as a nursing assistant, I have encountered challenges that have made me realize that I can help patients in a greater capacity. For this reason, I felt that I should take the bold step of enrolling for a degree in nursing at your institution.

My interest in pursuing this program led me to seek a further understanding of what it means to be a professional nurse. In my quest for this knowledge, I stumbled upon the book "Professional nursing practice: concepts and perspectives" authored by Kathleen Blais. The book provides a deep focus on the challenges that individuals overcome on their way to become professional nurses and leaders in this field. After reading the book I reflected on the challenges that I have encountered personally as a nursing assistant. I have taken care of patients who could not accept a blood transfusion simply because of their personal or religious beliefs. Learning about different illnesses have also been a challenge especially due to the limited off-duty hours that nurses have. Therefore, given an opportunity to study in your institution, I would be better equipped to handle some of these challenges in future.

Every shift I attend to is normally full of eye-catching moments, some of them joyful and others sorrowful. Personally, my most notable patient care experience occurred when I was still a little girl. I always felt that I would grow up to be a great nurse if given an opportunity to take that direction in my career. At one time, my mother became critically ill. My love for my mother was incomparable to anything else in the world. It was a fragile moment for everyone in the family. I felt like she was my patient so I did everything to make sure she had the best care possible. However, the care I offered her was only good enough to make her feel loved by a family member. I lost her at such a young age. At that moment I wished that I was better equipped to understand her illness. If I knew better, she would not have died such a cruel death. Reflecting on that moment, I feel that if I get an opportunity to study nursing, I would be better equipped to save more people like her.

My career goals as a professional nurse would be to provide quality care to patients, educating patients on health care, furthering my education, and providing a secure environment for my patients. This scholarship will be helpful because it is the first step towards achieving those goals. Secondly, acquiring knowledge in nursing will equip me with the necessary information that I need to educate my patients on health care. Most importantly, studying nursing will enable me to understand what a secure environment in a healthcare setting entails.

Conclusion

Overall, as much as there are many other candidates who are equally qualified for this opportunity, I feel that my passion and commitment to this field gives me a head-start. Also, my experience as a nursing assistant will provide a solid basis for understanding concepts. If I get accepted, it will be an opportunity to make a greater contribution to health care. I believe the information I have provided will be sufficient to form a neutral assessment of my capabilities.
