Introduction

As the two approached the banks of the sea, neither spoke nor made a sound as they were terrified and tired because of the run through the long and thick forest. They were unaware that another mystery was awaiting them since there were no visible means to cross the sea to the other side of the island. The fishermen had already gone home as it was already getting dark and there were signs of an oncoming storm and could not risk their lives. Hence, they had no one to help them, and the only thing they could have done was sleep on the beach and wait for a miracle to happen or a good Samaritan to come to their rescue.

The article by ERIC Digest, Narratology: The Study of Story Structure, emphasizes that the plot reveals the story and what the writer intended the reader to know or understand. The above narrative, however, does not have a plot as it begins in the middle with no distinct beginning or end. It lacks a clear storyline making it difficult for the audience to comprehend or make sense of the actions as depicted. Moreover, the writer does not describe the characters to help the reader visualize them. The only thing about them is the number as can be deduced from the beginning statement 'As the two....' Therefore, it is difficult to understand who or what this story is about as it lacks specific substantial leads.

Traditionally-formed story

The Hare and the Tortoise is a story for children, and it is about a planned race between the two animals where the tortoise won despite his slowness compared to the hare's swiftness. The writer has observed the significant key elements including the plot, characters, and theme. It begins by an explanation that the two characters had a conflict where the hare was making fun of the tortoise because it is slow; thus, they decided to resolve it by participating in a race with fox as the judge. They met, and it kicked off as arranged with the hare taking the lead until he was out of sight. After some distance, he decides to take a nap as he was confident his competitor was far behind him. However, he overslept, and this gave the tortoise the chance to reach and pass him. By the time he woke up, the tortoise was already at the finish line, and he won the race.

The moral of this story is that swiftness is not always the key to success, but persistence and humility are also essential. More so, it has a plot with a precise beginning and finishing, and it is easy for the reader to understand the storyline. One can comprehend what happened, the reasons why and who was involved since the writer has brought out the theme and the characters distinctly. Thus, as illustrated in the article by ERIC Digest, the narrative has been comprehensively written and structured to reflect human behavior and universal events such as conflicts, pride, and patience among different people. It is possible to relate it to daily occurrences, unlike the other story that had no clear plot or characterization. It, therefore, meets the standards of a well-formed story and serves the various functions as explained in the article including acquiring significant knowledge about the world.
