Obesity is a disorder which involves the accumulation of fats in the body. The condition increases the risk of a person to experience various health problems and diseases such as high blood pressure, heart disease, and diabetes. Individuals who are overweight can reduce their weight by checking on their dietary conditions, behavioral changes, and increasing physical activities (Xu & Xue, 2016). For example, exercising helps in minimizing the cholesterol level in ones' bodies. Also, in severe cases, the use of prescribed drugs and weight loss surgery are additional remedies to treat obesity. Therefore, due to the increased cases of obesity, this paper will discuss the causes, risk factors, and prevention of obesity.
Obesity occurs whenever an individual takes more calories than they burn through daily activities or exercises. People with sedentary lifestyles acquire more calories from the food they consume, thus leading to fat accumulation in the body. For example, people who eat from fast foods and consume processed foods are at high risk of becoming obese (Xu & Xue, 2016). The body tends to store the extra calories as fat hence causing the person to gain weight. Therefore, continuous exercise and involvement in daily activities can help in burning the calories, thus reducing obesity among populations.
Additionally, some of the risk factors to obesity are genetics, unhealthy diets, medical problems, age, pregnancy, and family lifestyles. Persons' genes might affect the quantity of fat stored in the body and how it is distributed. Also, genetic determines how the body burns calories when carrying out various activities and how it converts food into energy. People who eat unhealthy diets from fast foods and processed meals tend to have more calories, thus becoming obesity. Diets with increased levels of calories, therefore lacking vegetables and fruits contribute to weight gain among individuals (Xu & Xue, 2016). More so, age tends to increase the risk of becoming obese since as one age, they get involved in a less active lifestyle without exercise and vigorous activities. Therefore, people are advised to check and limit what they consume to reduce the occurrence of obesity cases in their lives.
On the other hand, whether one is at the risk of being obese or overweight, they can follow different steps to prevent the occurrence of health problems and unhealthy weight gain. People can involve exercises, either daily or weekly. Intense activities such as swimming and walking help in burning of calories, thus reducing weight gain. Also, following healthy eating habits such as whole grains, fruits, and vegetables will help in lowering caloric levels in the body (Xu & Xue, 2016). Individuals can choose meals which promote good health and healthy weight, thus minimizing occurrence weight gain that leads to obesity. Therefore, monitoring of ones' weight helps in determining if efforts put in weight loss are effective or not. For successful weight loss plans, one has to ensure consistency in exercises, thus increasing the chances of achieving ones' goals of promoting a good health.
