Following his reappointment for another five years as the Vice Chancellor of La Trobe University, John Dewar has invited Gil Mc Lachlan to the Bundora Campus for a tour. The two will hold a press conference this Friday at the Bundora Campus at 11 a.m. They are expected to announce that La Trobe University and the AFL have made a 3-year education partnership agreement. This is the first time the AFL has made a partnership agreement with a university.
The partnership will be beneficial in that it will increase the number of post-graduate students at the University. There is also a belief in La Trobe University that the partnership with the AFL will offer students more opportunities for work experience in the 'real world'. This is because students studying sport-related courses will take some of their classes at the AFL. Other benefits to La Trobe University Students include discounted AFL tickets and discounts offered by AFL sponsors. AFL players also stand to benefit as they will have an opportunity to study at La Trobe University.
Having been established in the year 1897, the AFL has become the most popular winter sports in Australia with more than 300,000 fans attending an AFL match each weekend. The sport can attract the interest of talented students who want to join the league in the future. The sport pays well as the average salary of an AFL player in 2017 was $352,470. This agreement is important as students will have an opportunity to learn from the best in the league. The AFL is responsible for all levels of Australian Rules football. There are more than 1.5 million people playing Australian Rules football in various competitions around the country.
La Trobe University has always aspired to be 'number one' in sports. Since its formation 51 years ago, the university has grown to approximately 40,000 students. These students are all ready for sports action as the AFL comes to their university. The agreement between La Trobe and the AFL will not affect the existing relationship with Carlton FC. Unfortunately, Richmond, Essendon, and the Western Bulldogs have been quick to disallow La Trobe students to take part in their programs due to their existing relationship with AFL clubs.
La Trobe University is only 15 kilometers away from away from Melbourne, which is the reason why Melbourne City FC is based at La Trobe University. Due to its new association with La Trobe, the AFL will stage a pre-season warm-up game at La Trobe University in 2019. The university has commenced plans to construct a new $75 million sports precinct aside from opening campuses in Adelaide, Brisbane, and Perth. The expansion will accommodate the expected increase in enrollment for the university's programs.
Conclusion
This partnership agreement is not the only one of its kind. Deakin University has signed a deal with the National Basketball League to be the major sponsor of the new NBL team based at Knox. Also, Swinburne University and Richmond have opened their third fitness center together. Such agreements can only make our institutions of learning better.
