Introduction
The handling transcultural practices in the healthcare profession is the most important theme that I have had to learn and develop in my Nursing Diverse Population course. As a student in nursing, you have to learn to deal with people from different cultures. The people will have different perspectives and, therefore, as a nurse, it would be appropriate to learn their cultures so as to provide effective and efficient services. For example, in some cultures, the women are not allowed to speak where their husband and elder people are present. Therefore, in a situation where such a woman brings a sick child, it will be the duty of the husband to speak on behave of the woman. This may pose a challenge because the woman will be speaking to the husband when asked questions by the physician and the husband answers the physician. However, as a nursing student, the course enables understand such differences in culture and thus act appropriately.
The theme guides me as a student towards learning on the relevant cultures of different communities where I might be in future be posted for work. Therefore, my first obligation as a student is to learn before I can practice in the field. There are many areas that are developed through the course. I am able to understand the dynamics of different cultures, there is also improved cognitive ability, there is also improved problem-solving ability and enhanced leadership skills. The course provides an all-round experience for the student in the learning process.
The course increases on my social interaction aspects with other people. In the nursing career, it is all about interaction with the patients, the families, the other physicians and many others. Therefore, the course enhances my ability to interact with other people. It is an important aspect not only of the course but also for the whole person's wellbeing. It is a compulsory characteristic of any career since communication cannot be evaded in any of the professions.
The course also ensures that I gain the attribute of accuracy. In this case, when dealing with the patient's life one has to be accurate as there is no aspect of trial and error. This is because one person's life has got no reversal in an occasion of death. Accuracy is a property that would also be beneficial in the day-to-day living even outside the career path. It is, therefore, one of the attributes that one would have to acquire in the course for the benefit even outside the career points.
No career or course, in this case, will be a 'smooth line'. There will have to be challenges which will have to be overcome and 'hurdles' which will have to be jumped. Moreover, there will be pitfalls which will have to be evaded. The diverse populations' course is not an exception. It has got some dissonances that may befall the students in the career path. It is not rather a simple course as it will require logical reasoning. Therefore, for me as a student to attain better scores in the exams I will have to work extra hard. Moreover, patience is a virtue that is required for me as a student dealing with the transcultural populations. Some of the cultures may seem to be 'stupid' and outdated but as a student, I will have to deal with them. It is a matter of learning to deal with different situations, people, beliefs, values, and cultures. This will call for a great extent of patience to be exercised.
The essay shows a person who can be able to handle different scenarios in the career path. The student has got both the thinking and the physical ability to do that which is required in the nursing profession. It is good for the student to learn to deal with the patients from the diverse populations. These are people who have got different beliefs, cultures, traditions, and values. The student has got a role to provide efficient and effective services to the patient. This is an observation of their different cultures. For example, some of the patients may refuse touching while providing therapeutic care to them. This might be a challenge for a student who does not understand the people's culture.
The electronic portfolio audience on some occasions may present some challenges. They may not understand one's position because they can be in different geographical locations and observe different cultures. It is difficult to appeal to the electronic portfolio audience. However, the essay provides them with a better understanding of a student who can be able to work in different geographical locations and different cultures. This is an added advantage for the student and would give him an upper hand in his career path compared to other students.
Conclusion
The essay shows a student who is committed to his career path. It shows also patience and a good combination of the qualities that are required for the student in the job market. It also shows passion in my career. This is because some of the people will take up some of the careers due to the expected benefits. If the benefits are withdrawn then the performance would deteriorate. The student is able to work smart. This is because smartness is a virtue that would be necessary when dealing with populations with different cultures. The student will have to take up the nursing profession with an open mind with an expectation of learning much in his career path.
