In the real world, there is the possibility of people finding themselves in different speaking situations. Meaning that the way you talk in one situation has to differ from another condition. There exists dynamics in the type of evidence, organizations, and language in different speaking situations. Speaking in public is different from writing as a form of communication in a way that the audience is present for a specific occasion. The audience, the occasion, and the purpose are examples of the three different situations that I might find myself in and my language content, organization and type of evidence I use will have to vary.
The audience I will be addressing will affect my way of speaking (Webteam, 2018). The way that I organize my words when I am speaking in a lecture room full of students will be different from the way that I do when I speak to a group of friends I have not met in the last three years. Alternatively, one speaks about the dangers of drug use differently to their younger sibling than they may talk about the same issue in a church congregation. Before addressing an audience, I will have to ask myself the two simple questions which are: who is the audience? and what are the characteristics that make them different? Audiences vary in value qualities, knowledge, and intellectual capacity. Also, it is important to distinguish between a general and specific audience, formal and informal one. The way of speaking differs with the type of audience that is being addressed.
The occasion to which the audience is gathered affects the way of talking about a matter (Webteam, 2018). For instance, I will have to know different ways that I am supposed to use when speaking at a wedding and in a funeral. The method by which I will organize my language and evidence will be different in a lecture hall with the way I do in a political rally. Each of these occasions has unique ways of being addressed. Additionally, speaking situations occur at different times. The speeches I want to give will be affected by the time of the event. The way I give a talk in the morning is different from the way in which I relay the speech in a hot afternoon. The way that I will address the audience at different times will vary from a formal way to informal, light speeches to heavy ones and serious talks to the funny ones. Treating a matter will change with the occasion that the audience is gathered.
The third speaking situation that I might find myself is the purpose that I will intend to accomplish when I speak (Webteam, 2018). The two common goals of giving a speech maybe to inform or to persuade. Informing the audience meaning, I have to speak to convince the audience about an idea. The audience should be able to learn more than they already know from me. On the contrary, speaking to persuade will entail using a tone of voice that fetches for ideas and beliefs, and from there the audience may want to change their mind and adopt a new position. In a general purpose speech, I may have to offer few laughs or build on a point from an audience's opinion.
Conclusion
In conclusion, in speaking, it depends on how formal or informal the speaker and the audience are and the relationship that exists between the person speaking and the audience. Informal language structure may be used when speaking with the people we are applied to and feel more comfortable with while adopting formal speaking on situations with people that we don't know or we are not comfortable. The audience, the occasion, and the purpose are the three different situations that I might find myself in, and therefore I will have to vary my language content, organization, and type of evidence.
