Over the decades, phones have been one of the most significant distractions for drivers on the roads. Driving a vehicle without putting your full concentration on the way could bring havoc. In this case, this paper tries to show how texting while driving, whether on a busy road or a less busy road should become illegal everywhere. The main reasons behind this argument are; texting while driving makes the driver lose full concentration on driving (visual distraction, cognitive and manual distractions), texting while driving has been the reason behind many accidents and crashes, it has also been behind the loss of many lives and lastly it has caused many damages and loss of property.
Texting while driving causes a lot of distractions. Distractions are dived into three; visual, cognitive and manual disturbances that lead to accidents. It is either one on the road is driving, or is on their phone. Texting while driving causes visual distraction. For example, a driver cannot have their eyes glued to the phone and still be able to see what's happening on the road. Whether there is a car in front that could be knocked or whether they are other vehicles waiting for him or her to be on the move. Another type of distraction caused is the cognitive distraction. A rational mind cannot pay attention to two things happening at the same time. It is either the driver's mind will be focused on the message or the wheel. The last type of distraction caused is the manual distraction. As a normal human being, a driver has only two hands, so how is it possible to be typing with both hands and at the same time have your hands on the wheel? As you can see, all these are the kind of distractions that result from texting while driving.
Texting while driving has resulted in the loss of many lives. Research shows that about 1.2 million lives are lost yearly in the world and 50 million injured or disabled. Beings that had a bright future and would have been productive to the economy of the country in one way or the other. In most cases, drivers involved in road accidents out of texting and driving at the same time are those aged between 18 years to 25. These are the youth in the society. Give an example of a young student of law who is driving while texting and is involved in a head-on collision with another vehicle. This individual could have been a future lawyer to protect the law of the land and the innocent too.
Lastly, texting while driving on busy roads has caused accidents that have led to a lot of property loss. Give an example of a car which has been involved in an accident and yet it had cost the driver a lot to purchase it. Another instance is the money used to cater for the hospital bills of those victims involved in an accident caused by a careless driver who was texting. Families of these victims are forced to provide for hospital bills of their loved ones if these individuals don't have insurance cover to cater for their hospital bills. Lastly, is in the case where a vehicle swerves into a building, a house or a business shop of someone and destroys the owners' property. The owners end up getting losses in the long run.Conclusion
In conclusion, texting while driving should be made illegal everywhere. This is because of the many reasons explained above, and the examples are given. For instance, driving while texting causes a lot of distractions to the driver; mental, visual and manual, it is also behind many accidents and crashes, loss of many innocent lives and property damages. Therefore, to avoid all these, texting while driving should be illegalized and any driver caught in the act should be charged. The driver should compensate those involved in accidents caused out of driving while texting.
