School shooting became a common incident that happened in American schools such as the Johnboro massacre. This essay seeks to critique the author's opinion on children's safety. We are going to find out if the information provides by author are relevant as well as how media influence children's safety in school.
The author Daniel has a strong opinion on Children's safety in school. They are safe in school more than they are outside the school. According to the report by the school crime society, serious crimes comprising of robbery, sexual assault, rape cases, and assisted weaponry have significantly reduced between 1990 to 2004. However, the author did a shallow explanation of ways of preventing or acting during the school shooting. In our opinion, providing only two solid alternatives is not satisfactory, the author should list several options and also dealt with the equitability and safety of children in school.
Furthermore, Stuber's idea of conducting a drill in a school on the institution is important for safety measures and also contrary to the community settings. The school shooting has affected severely the relationship between school and society in general. Normally, the human being is a social being, but the massacre and killing as a result of shootings have created fear among people in the society and turned institution and school to fortifies, where money spending has been diverted to metal detectors, guards, as well as a safety consultant. According to the Daniel, the student noted saying they feel like caged animals being frisked and treated as if they are Potential homicidal fanatic. Students and children should be treated with love, affection, and understanding for them to appreciate and see the world to be a better place to live. Additionally, the community should be close and strong.
The media coverage on school shootings such as Johnboro and Columbine Massacre covered international news feeds that led to even expert analysis commenting and giving feedback. The author stated that the media news coverage intensified the seriousness of the incident that result to fear gripping parents and other nations' school wellbeing. However, the media is considered to bring along fear rather than a solution. The author noted that media has failed to provide ideal statistical evidence that can be used to put the risk of the incidents into perspective. We support the author's opinion that media news can exaggerate things far away from reality. Additionally, as a result of school shooting media coverage, the parent has recorded a high percentage of pessimism standing above 50%. These group of parents believes that school shooting is likely to happen in the future thus putting children safety in school into jeopardy.
Although Organization such as Civil Liberty Union dispute the use of Zero Tolerance in schools arguing that the is aggressive and massive; However, it can also bring in a strike of balance between discipline and indiscipline children, hence assisting in curbing as well as mitigating notorious practice such as school shootings
Conclusion
The author Garden Daniel of the book “Fear of Science" has been able to cover the topic of school safety effectively, we agreed with most of authors opinions including children are safer at school, media coverage on calamity can be exaggerated, and embracing “Zero Tolerance to a certain degree” expect a few such as limited provision on procedure and guideline on how to keep safe when school shooting occurs. Otherwise, the coverage on children's safety in school is expounded efficiently.
