Introduction

The increasing awareness about the dangers of obesity is one of the reasons many people have taken the debate about the ban on sodas very seriously. One of the issues to consider about the ban is that it has loopholes that may make it not to work effectively. First, it is only applicable to large drinks. One can, therefore, buy a number of small sugary drinks or two of the medium-sized drinks and have some quantity as the one banned. If the ban is to be effective, the city manager needs to apply a complete ban that would ensure that no surgery drinks are sold in the market. Another issue for concern is whether or not people will use homemade drinks that may contain even more amounts of sugar compared to the sodas. Besides, controlling what people can buy and use is not only interference in the private choices by people, but also affects business for small-time groceries. It is also important to consider the liberty that people should be given to choosing what they wish to use. It would be better if the choice to stop drinking a lot of sugary drinks came from the members of the public after being equipped with the knowledge they need on such products. It is very important that the city management considered awareness creation as a way of making people understand the harm in using too much of the sugary drinks. However, it is equally important to look at the reason the ban on sugary drinks is necessary. Being that the number of obese adults has been on the rise, important decisions such as a ban on some of the foodstuffs that are the leading cause of obesity is supported. There exist alternatives that people can use such as water and other flavored drinks with the required amounts of sugar.

The drinks have their advantages at the same time has their disadvantages, therefore, before the federal government chooses to ban the soda it is important to educate the public on the advantage and disadvantages of using too many sugary drinks some of the advantages of using or drinking soda include adding energy to the body (Krukowski, Conley, Sterling & Rainville, 2016). Since soda contains lots of sugar, it is one of the beverages that are capable of adding sugar to the body that the body utilizes in the form of energy. On the other hand, the disadvantages of using soda are that it contains a lot of calories which increases the risk of diabetes and at the same time responsible for the massive suffering and premature deaths as a result of obesity. Many of the people who are suffering from obesity or diabetes are because of the consumption of calorie packaged beverages. Therefore, it is important to ban such food in order to improve health wise (Krukowski, Conley, Sterling & Rainville, 2016). Again soda in a large amount is toxic. Unlike in the past when the consumption of the soda was very low, today the rate at which soda is used is very high, and as a result, many people are becoming victims of it.

The federal government has the power to ban some of the foodstuffs associated with obesity. It is, therefore, a good thing that they are at the forefront of addressing the issue of obesity, especially the causes and prevention measures. In as much as the other institutions and organizations such as hospitals can be drivers of the change regarding the need to reduce the number of sugary drinks people take, they lack the authority and the resources. The federal government has the resources to use in conducting awareness public relations debates to inform people of the need to live healthy lives. Some of the advantages that the federal government has over some other entities, which may need to address the issue of obesity, is that they can be in charge of the mainstream and social media. The platforms can then be used by the federal government to discourage the use of a lot of sugary drinks through adverts, live discussions and by banning adverts that encourage uncontrolled consumption of sugary drinks. Again, Lack of government resources in the health care sectors has lots of consequences on individuals. First, individual have the rights to medication therefore if the government are not providing the resources then it means that the common citizens have been denied their rights by the government.

The main question by the CBS/New York Times is that does provision of health care a role of the government? In general, there has been a lot of expectation on the government on how they can provide healthcare coverage or insurance 2000 to 2006 with a leveling off thereafter, and in the longer series, a decline from 2009 onward (Corman, & Levin, 2016). The government has a big role to play in the health care sector. As indicated by the CBS, some of the obligations that the government should intervene are improving the efficiency and equity to carry out public health functions and to produce energetic public goods that have a bearing on the health development (Corman, & Levin, 2016). The government should also take part in strengthening health systems functions by particularly focusing on the governance, financing and delivery services so as to protect the social role of government in health development.
