AAMN was founded by Steve miller in the year 1971 where he coerced other gentlemen practicing nursing to join him.by then he and other men in nursing were based at Michigan. With time the number of the group kept doubling and increasing drastically with about 2301 registered members. Later on the group invited Luther Christman to give them a hand in organizing and growing the association. However, the group was forced to run without its founder Miller after he decided to join law school. In the year 1974 national male nurses association was born after Luther convinced nurses in Michigan to converge with the nurses group at Chicago.
In a period of 3 years, the merged organization had gathered more members than the initial number of 2300. Every state in US had a representative. One of the main events that took place when NMNA was formed was the Annual General Meeting where the members were able to deliberate on issues affecting them while providing support to the leadership of the organization. However, the association collapsed after the members ceased attending the meetings.
In the year 1980 the association was again braced into life with Luther Christman as the leader and the vice chairperson of Rush- Presbyterian St. Lukes medical center and the first general meeting held at Chicago with 120 members showing up. The members present vowed to enlist more members to join the association. Other wings of the group were founded under Edward Halloran as the president and Luther as the chairman in New York, Ohio, California, Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois and Indiana.
During the next general meeting held in 1981 the name of the group was converted to American Assembly for Men in Nursing (AAMN) which could represent its member goals better. Some of the objectives stipulated here are:
men and the young men in the US to be coerced to pursue nursing and join the organization to strengthen and provide health care to all Americans
men in nursing to be encouraged to become professionals and demonstrate to each other the many contributions being achieved by professional male nurses.
Members to fully participate in nursing profession.
Since its revitalization the group has continued up to date via volunteering and perseverance of its members. More meetings are being held and newsletter being published. This group is the voice that supports and encourages male practicing nursing nationally. Despite its humble beginning the group has grown up to the national level. In addition, AAMN has followed the initial objectives to the letter with only one additional objective which is supporting issues on the health of men.
The mission of the group is to shape the practice, education, research, and leadership for men in nursing and advance mens health.
Its vision is to be the association of choice representing men in nursing and its purpose is to provide a framework for nurses, as a group, to meet, to discuss and influence factors, which affect men as nurses.
The board of directors governs AAMN which is held liable by the associations by laws to execute the organizations business and making decisions in relation to how the group will spend the funds.
AAMN local chapters are nationally recognized and approved by the organizations by laws. Nevertheless, the chapters have their own by laws and have an independent organizational structure. Members registered at a national level dont require local chapter membership.
