Introduction
Coronavirus pandemic is a respiratory disease that affects humans since the end of last year. Its adverse effects on social, political, economic, and cultural spheres have been evident over time. People have had to try and live with the virus, with some other people even succumbing to the disease. Coronavirus has also had effects on pets. A pet is an animal kept for pleasure and companionship has also felt the coronavirus results, taking into account that the humans who take care of them have been affected, and so are the pets. The study is concerned with understanding whether the dog as a pet has been affected by the coronavirus crisis has been affected by the pandemic. The journal "Pets: the voiceless victims of the COVID-19 crisis" explains the adverse effects of the virus on pets, including starving and killing the pets.
The reason for choosing a dog as the pet, and there are many pets, is because the dog is a social animal and has many owners. The dog can also be used as an animal in the provision of security. The dog's use in the study is attributed to the fact that dogs are available in many homes and are a common pet to many. They have tamed animals that are all over the world. The dog can also be trained and is intelligent hence making it a particular type of animal pet. Pets like dogs have found themselves in a war on coronavirus in which they are not a part of, with research showing a low level of prevalence of the virus among animals and the level of transmission.
The Dog Persona
For the past years, as long as I can remember, I have lived with a man in a conducive environment with him providing for me all that I need starting from food, water, company, and love. The discovery of the Corona Virus from Wuhan, China, which the doctors have proved to be fatal, has affected me for the past year. It is no longer the same in my living conditions with the man as I have been forced to adapt to this 'new normal' as I have no other choice. Below are some of the challenges I have faced in the past year due to this Corona Virus, which I wish had not occurred in the first place;
Rations on Food and Other Supplies
The pre- Corona period saw me increase weight at a higher rate because my owner was feeding me. I miss the days when I would eat a bone meal and leave a whole lot of it because my stomach was full. It would even stay there for a full day without me looking at it. The good old days of feeding on meat for breakfast are some days of the past. They are long gone, and the leaving of a considerable amount of meat in my kennel still haunts me. I used to even leave some consumables to the cat, which was underfed at the time, and those are now the good old days.
These days my owner has no always stayed in the house, and all I hear him say is that the streets are not safe, and many people are dying of the virus. They even fear that they might as well get the infection. The other day I almost slept on an empty stomach thanks to the leftover of the bone meal that I had left. I heard him say that the stores had been closed by that time, citing the reason for the after 8 PM curfew. I have even lost weight by far more than 5 kilograms. I used to be an enormous beast, but these days I look at myself and wonder if I am sick, but I guess it is the reduced food that I am feeding. The female dog (Kashabrina) of my neighbor cannot even take a second look at me now. I wish this virus would go away.
Loss of Lives and Friends
I am unfortunate because I have lost many friends due to this pandemic. My best friend Tommy was taken to the veterinary, and I have never seen him. He was not sick, but I overheard his owner saying that he no longer needed a dog because he used to loiter a lot and could bring the Virus to the house, and the best thing was to give him a painless death using injection by the veterinary doctor.
Many dog owners are giving away their dogs, citing that a pet right now is not a priority, but the family's safety is. I am even worried that my owner will give me away. I wish he does not. I cannot bear the thought of me being given to another owner because not all dog owners are as kind as Mr. Patrick.
Reduced Social Interaction
I miss the days when Mr. Patrick would take me for a walk during his morning runs. I used to run so fast past him, and he would follow at a distance. I even know his jogging route. These days he does have his morning runs anymore. He has even bought that elliptical jogging machine and put it in the house. He says that he can have his morning runs there, and my morning is this day as dull as ever. All I have to do is stand there and watch him.
I miss the park visit that my owner used to take me. Saturdays and Sundays were his resting days, and he used to take me to the dogs' park. The experience at the park was incredible. I miss playing with other dogs at the park and showing them my prowess in the sense of smell game that we used to play. I was very good at it. There was this one time I smelled a hidden bone at the park buried some feet under the ground. I now heard that the park is currently closed and that it will be opened when the disease is over. I hope it will be soon.
I miss the "throw and catch" game we use to play during the evenings. I was so good at it and am afraid that my skills will below the next time I play it. When Mr. Patrick threw the ball, I used to run so fast and catch it before it falls, and he would come and repeatedly rub me on the neck, telling me that I am a good dog. Mr. Patrick son used to take me with him during his meetings with his friend on the block and his baseball practice on Fridays evenings. Now the schools are closed and stay at home and sleep, which is pretty dull. I would what is the delay.
Sleeping Outside
Before the Corona Virus outbreak, I used to sleep on the same bed with my owner. The warmth of his blankets made me fall into deep slumber like a puppy. Nowadays, he no longer wants me in his bed. He even made a kennel for me, which was put on the porch. The outside is frigid, making me have sleepless nights. Sometimes I am even forced to sneak inside the house and sleep on the couch because I can no longer bear the cold nights. Thank God it is summer. I wonder how I will survive inside the kennel during winter.
Psychological Torture
Nowadays, I am lost in my thoughts, thinking that I have lost my importance as a dog. I even believe that Mr. Patrick does not love me anymore. His action towards me does not portray the care I used to get before the outbreak. Veterinary doctor's visits have reduced significantly, and I worry about my health.
However, I oppose that I should be getting this treatment. I have been receiving a constant check-in by doctors, and I wonder when this outbreak will end. I hope that this situation will end soon and the normality of events remains.
Human Argument
The coronavirus's adverse effects on pets can be attributed to the pet owners' impact that is transferred to the dog. Many measures that are taken by the pet owners are protective measures to make sure that they do not get the fatal disease that has claimed many lives so far.
A dog is not a human being, and though there are laws protecting animals, human life is a priority.
Solution
The adverse effects of the virus's outbreak can be solved by various solutions, including the humanitarian responsibility to making sure that pets like dogs receive the best treatment possible, citing that the pandemic will soon be over with the invention of the vaccine, which is a work in progress. This is the leading solution to this problem because pets do not have brains, and their sole responsibility rests on the owner.
Conclusion
Pets like dogs have had to face some challenges due to the Corona Virus outbreak. These challenges include starvation, death, sleeping outside, and reduced care by the owners. The solutions to these problems depend on individual responsibility to one's pet.
