Do you recommend journaling to your patients? Why, or why not?
Journaling is merely putting down the occurrence of events and the expression of feelings that one encounters over time. This is a significant practice that I will advise my patients to embrace because; it helps to reduce stress amongst the patience since in the process of writing down one can engage their brain. Journaling also makes the patient evaluate and give their personal views on the treatment program accorded to them. This practices also allows the doctor to track the treatment respond of the patients over time thus helping in making a decision.
Why do you think many people are so open to a complementary, alternative or integrative approach to health?
In my view, a good number of people inherit the knowledge of complementary or alternative health products from the parents. This means therefore that the practice is deeply rooted in the fabric of the society thus the subsequent generation adopt and pinned trust on it due to advice and transfer of knowledge from their fore parents. Religion also plays a role in the adoption of this health practice in that some religion encourages their followers to refrain from conventional health practice and encourages them to adopt alternative health thus placing no option for people other than to embrace that practice. The current scientist research spearheaded by NCCIH which is a government agency for scientific research has also done continuous research on the usefulness and safety of integrated and alternative health. This, in one way or another, has encouraged people to embrace this non-negative impact. The past success stories on the usage of alternative and integrated health have also contributed much to the continued adoption of this practice (Barnes P.M, Bloom B, Nahin R. 2017).
If you have discussed any complementary, alternative or integrative interventions with patients within the last month, please share the highlights of your discussion.
I recently discussed the issue of the complementary and alternative health practice with the cancer patients. The question which they were asking is the broader meaning of this non-conventional health practice and its advantages and demerits. In the response of this, I described to them as the various option of treatment apart from the convention which is not limited to the use of traditional herbs and physical and body exercise. What came out clearly from them also is the specific complementary that they can adopt. In response to their question, I suggested to them the use of integrative therapies and told them how it helps the patients to experience less pain and anxiety. Alternatively, I also told them that massage therapy might be an option though it may lead to short term improvement both in pain and the general mood of the patient. They also question the health-related behaviors as a measure to mitigate the risk of getting cancer or reducing the worsening of it. While answering that question, I reveal to them that proper eating and doing enough physical activities is an excellent remedy to reduce or avoid cancer.
Do you feel it is part of your professional responsibility to educate yourself on the major complementary, alternative or integrative modalities? Why, or why not?
As a nurse, it is of great importance to be well conversant with this non-conventional health practice because many patients currently are using this method for instance in the USA more than 30% of adults and 12% of children embrace this practice. Therefore, to avoid the counter effects of integrating this method of health, i.e., both conventional and non-conventional, it is necessary to get educated on this to enable me advice the patients accordingly (Wang C. 2014).
