Innovative Tools

According to Evans (2002), project management is a complex undertaking with numerous major responsibilities. Luckily there are various available innovative tools to assist with completing the tasks and carrying out the responsibilities. A few of the tools require a computer with assisting software, whereas the rest may be applied manually. Project managers should select a project management tool that makes the most sense. Gantt Charts and Program Evaluation Review Technique (PERT) are the two most widely used project management tools.

Program Evaluation Review Technique (PERT)

Program Evaluation Review Technique is a management tool utilized to plan, organize, and coordinate tasks within a project. PERT is essentially a method utilized to examine the tasks concerned with accomplishing a particular project, specifically the time required to accomplish each task and to determine the least amount of time required to conclude the total project. Application of PERT planning will involve identification of the specific activities and milestones, determination of the proper sequence of activities, construction of a network diagram, and estimation of the time necessary for each activity

Advantage of PERT Chart

The PERT will allow for the creation of milestones for the project. During the time between each milestone, a PERT chart will help in the recognition of any possible results or impediments that the project might encounter. This implies that the impediments can be quickly addressed, prepare for the impediments, and help the project sustain the momentum.

Disadvantage

To develop a suitable PERT chart, plenty of effort and time is involved in creating, development, and maintenance. A lot of input is required from different departments of the organization; as a result, it considered being very tedious.

Gantt Chart

Gantt chart will be used to represent the calendar of tasks required to accomplish a project. Since the Gantt chart is easily understood, it can be employed to transform the way the company conducts business. For the business, the responsibilities will go to the project team, who will plan for the daily management at the operational level and the structure of the project. On the project for the business, the project manager will supervise the operational level of the project to do away with risk factors of the project (Evans, 2002). It is essential for the project manager to fully understand the responsibilities of the project team, where they ought to work in the project, splitting the project group based on their sectors and skills. According to Slack et al., (2010), there ought to be a project crew that ensures the project is accomplished on time. The financial consultants will secure the spending of the project that is the amount of funding the project requires and how to finance it. Besides, the project manager will be in charge of general supervision and monitoring the performance of the project.

Conclusion

The critical path method will be used to control schedule overruns for the critical as well as but schedule overruns for other tasks. As posited by Evans (2002), every single non-critical path has slack time. The tasks on the non-critical path can then be reorganized with the slack time reserve. Nevertheless, when the slack time nears zero, the project manager should take account of the dangers of schedule overruns. Moreover, if slack time shifts to zero, the path should be managed appropriately as it changes to a critical path.
