This newsletter is to let you know that all children are born with an innate desire to connect with the people around them. Social and emotional development, therefore, starts with the bond between the child and its caregiver. When parents and caregivers establish a positive relationship with children from birth through the early years, children feel safe and secure (Jones et al. 2015). This safety lays the foundation for healthy social and emotional development. Early child care affects how children experience the world, express themselves, manage their emotions, and establish relations with other people.

Regarding the children's behavioral, emotional, and social development, you should model the emotions and behavior that you want your child to develop. Besides, be responsive to your child's emotions and behaviors and respond quickly to basic needs to developing trust. Also, help your child work through negative emotions and ask them open-ended questions to help them develop problem-solving skills. Also, talk about your child's emotions and how to cope with difficult emotions. Make sure to encourage your children to try new things and learn how much they can do if they try. It is also essential to play games with them and teach them how to take a turn, win and lose, share, and negotiate.

Concerning the holiday's family wellness activity, we recommend that you help your child play galloping. Physical activity for children is essential for physical health, fitness, and development of motor and movement skills, as well as mental health, social well-being, and learning. Besides, children benefit from structured and free play, both indoors and outdoors. By providing a stimulating, safe environment for active play, you can help the child master motor skills and develop social, emotional, and behavioral abilities (Niemisto et al., 2019). To promote the development of these skills, we recommend the parents to play galloping with their children.

Galloping is a forward slide movement where the forward footsteps with a slight spring followed by a transfer of body weight to the rear foot. As the back foot receives the body weight, the same front foot repeats the forward step movement. The front foot remains in front always, and the rear foot remains at the back throughout the gallop. Contact with the ground is made with a heel-toe pattern. Arms are not needed for balance but may be used for other purposes like holding on horse reins. Smooth and rhythmic movement should be made the pace.

When practicing the movement sequence with your child, begin slowly and pick up speed gradually. Demonstrate the step, together, and leap and complete with verbal cues. Let your child imagine he is riding a horse that is going very slowly at first and increases speed gradually and let the child respond accordingly. As a parent, avail adequate verbal and visual signals to enhance the rhythm of movement. E.g. "Click-clock, click-clock, click-clock..." If you need the gallop to move more quickly, have a horse race of two or more children to race over a distance using only galloping movements.

Moreover, you can role play with your child, whereby the child will be the horse, and you become the rider. Consequently, a hula rope will be required around your child's waist. You can also be the horse, and the child becomes the rider and allows him to follow your galloping. You need to ensure that the play area has sufficient space and is free of obstacles.

Nevertheless, we hold high hopes that you will do your best to help your child develop socially, emotionally, and behaviorally.

Kind regards,

Jane Martins
