Introduction
Benchmarking is a strategic planning tool used by healthcare facilities to measure and implement changes to the organization. Usually, benchmarking is the process of giving and taking the organization’s performance metrics and comparing the standards developed using data from a similar organization. Benchmarking is used as a strategic tool for learning the organization's performance in comparison to similar or peer organizations, identify areas that need change, and how to implement the changes required (HealthCatlyst, 2020). An example of a benchmark is the National Cancer Quality Measures Compared to achievable Benchmarks (AHRQ, 2020).
A healthcare data dashboard, on the other hand, is an information management system that visually tracks healthcare data and displays the key performance indicators (KPI), key data points, and metrics to monitor the continuity and overall performance of healthcare organizations to meet specific process or objectives. Thus, the modern healthcare data dashboard is an interactive performance management system that has integrated medical data and other key performance data to measure, monitor, and manage performance more effectively (Ghazisaeidi, et al., 2015).
Conclusion
Benchmarking is a critical process in healthcare practices. Healthcare leaders use benchmarking to identify, learn, and implement necessary organizational, cultural, and production changes to meet the set performance standards and quality of care. Benchmarking practices also provide healthcare facilities with essential information to help in strategic planning and as a metric tool to measure the organization's performance. Lastly, benchmarking is used as a continuous quality improvement tool (Ettorchi-Tardy, Levif, & Michel, 2012). Dashboards, on the other hand, are an interactive decision-support tool in improving healthcare outcomes. The dashboard provides vital oversight and near real-time data that aid healthcare leaders, managers, and clinicians, to make a better decision. With the new integration of the HIE is a vital component of the EHRs in providing essential data needed outside the clinical information to providers, and accurate EHRs offer the healthcare facility key information in providing 21st-century healthcare (Garg, et al., 2014). Types of healthcare dashboards include the Healthcare Organization dashboard, which incorporates high-level performance data and benchmarking data, patient-perception dashboard, Clinical dashboard, and Donation dashboards (Leconte, n.d.). A real-life example of the healthcare dashboard is Virginia Commonwealth University Health System (VCUHS) implemented to address preventable medical errors.
