Introduction
Throughout my life, I have always wanted to be of service to society. I have had a particular interest in nursing and ever desired to see people live healthy lives. I believe that good health is a prerequisite for economic growth, and healthy people make a healthy nation. I grew up seeing families go through many challenges in healthcare. In a family, healthcare provision entails many aspects: diagnosis, treatment, counseling and other services offered to adults as well as children I have heard of cases where a parent dies from a particular disease and due to low-income family health care, children contract the same illness thus continuing the same vicious cycle. I want to become a nurse practitioner in primary health so that I can take care of family health issues wholesomely.
Although, as a nurse practitioner, I can specialize in pediatrics, I would rather choose primary health care. As a primary health nurse practitioner, I will not be limited to any specific area of expertise. This role will also open up chances for gaining more knowledge in the field of family health. As a primary health provider, I will deal with issues pertaining to children and adults, as well. This, to me, is the chance I need to learn more outside the classroom regarding health care provision. Some medical issues affecting families are hereditary. Dealing with the health conditions of the whole family will give me a chance to learn about the traits, testing, and taking corrective measures to prevent the spread of diseases.
Job security is another reason why I would choose primary health over pediatrics. There are more job opportunities for family health nurse practitioners than in pediatrics. Again, since I will have knowledge of a wide area of medical interventions, I can always shift from one area of specialization to another. However, the most significant benefit to me would be the satisfaction of seeing a healthy family grow in my care. I have a desire to see an educated community where healthy living is emphasized. Diet is one of the factors that contribute to illnesses and complicated health conditions. As a nurse practitioner in family health, I will have a chance to advise on matters of diet.
My professional and personal attributes relevant to the nurse practitioner -primary health role
One of the most important traits I have that suit me for the role is responsibility. I understand what would be expected of me and desire to fulfill my duties professionally and ethically. I acknowledge that I this role, I have to ensure that ty people under my care are also informed of their rights and responsibilities. I know the rules and boundaries pertaining to the engagement with patients. As a responsible person, I am ready to uphold the integrity of the profession by avoiding any careless practices which can endanger the lives of patients and tarnish my reputation and that of my colleagues. Another professional trait I possess is attentiveness. I am keen at observing trends, analyzing conditions to every detail, and following up to ensure no room for mistakes.
Competence is another trait that suits me for the job .nurse practitioners need to grow professionally on a daily basis. I endeavor to take a course on nutrition, which will increase my wealth of knowledge on family health issues. Knowing that the well-being of the family depends on the primary care provider and that a patient's recovery is linked to how the family is managing its affairs, I will be responsive enough to the needs of the patients to facilitate optimum results and satisfaction on the side of the patient. Apart from administering services to the patients, I will apply proper communication strategies, as they determine the success of every medical intervention. I will ensure that my patients are fully informed about the matters at hand. Also, I will listen to my patients' concerns and address them professionally.
Personally, I am a person of high integrity, a trait that is key to the role of nursing practitioner-primary health care. Integrity pertains to the pursuit of ethics in every aspect, thus ensuring a healthy relationship between the patients and the nurse practitioner. I will adhere to the rules and regulations of the job and not cross any boundaries. I will put the interests of the patients before my own and always endeavor to advocate for their rights. In cases where confidential information is shared between the patients and me, that formation will remain confiden5tial and will in no way be accessed by third parties. Confidentiality is a powerful attribute that will help me navigate the primary health care role as a nurse practitioner.
I maintain a positive attitude in all circumstances. This is crucial in the family health care role as it facilitates patients' recovery and continued well-being. I understand that patients, especially those suffering from chronic illnesses and terminal ailments, need to be given hope at all times. This, in turn, will help the patients gain trust in me as their nurse practitioner, and eventually, they recover. I am compassionate, and I appreciate the power of empathy and concern over a patient's condition. I always try to connect with a person by showing them that I feel what they are going through. This demonstrates a caring attitude that aids in the patient's recovery. Again, a caring attitude will help patients open up freely on any issues that may be affecting them.
Strategies for time management
I understand that in my training as a nurse practitioner in primary health care, a lot of time needs to be dedicated to learning and practice. I will put effective time management strategies to allocate the required 15 hours of preparation per week and have sufficient time for course work and placements. One of the primary strategies I will enforce is prioritizing my tasks so that significant hours are spent on studies rather than other personal activities. To implement this, I will be making a to-do-list at the end of each day so that every morning I wake up with a clear view of what I have to do in the day. This will ensure no time is w3asted, and consequently, the time intended for the course will be appropriately spent.
My number two strategy will be Elon Musk's time blocking method. I am aware that training to be a nurse practitioner requires focus and undivided attention to the course requirements' will apply the time blocking approach to enable me to focus without distractions. When it is time for course preparation and practice, I will give attention to the course at hand and allow no distractions from any other activities. At times, I will literally switch off my phone and pause communications with friends, to prevent the temptation of quitting from my study time to cater for friends' needs. I will have to make firm decisions and stand by them.
Thirdly, I will employ the Tony Robbins rapid planning method. This method is result-oriented focused on purposes and expected outcomes. I will be analyzing my purposes and taking massive action geared towards attaining my set goals. In addition, I will record my daily routine, checking to see which activities are time-wasters. Identifying these tasks, I will eliminate them from my schedule and re-focus the time on more important activities, education topping the list. Moreover, some of the activities can be automated. The recurring tasks consume time, which can be saved through automation. In this way, less time will be spent on these tasks, and therefore, I will shift the energy to my course requirement.
My understanding of primary health care
In my understanding, primary health care is an approach towards the health and well-being of society by focusing on the comprehensive aspects of health. It addresses the underlying factors affecting the health of individuals in the physical, mental, and social well-being. Emphasis is laid on the attainment of the highest standard of living, as stipulated in the Universal Declaration on Human Rights, Article 25 (nd). The article states that each person is entitled to a standard of living sufficient for the health and well-being of himself and his family. The definition includes the provision of medical care, housing, food, and social services. In essence, it is the first-level provision of personalized health care. It facilitates human development in all aspects: economic, social, and political.
Primary health care has become the most effective way of dealing with poor health and well-being. It is aimed at curbing the current crisis while working to prevent the occurrence of health challenges in the future. Since a significant number of child mortality rates are attributed to factors outside the health sector, primary health is the best way to handle the health crisis. Primary health is not just about treatment and diagnosis of health conditions but also brings together stakeholders who examine the impact of socio-economic and environmental conditions on human health. In my opinion, primary health is the future of well-being and a path to the attainment of sustainable development goals (SDGs).
Role of Nurse Practitioners in the delivery of primary health care
Nurse practitioners (NPs) are charged with the responsibility of providing primary health care to diverse populations. The health care delivery is tied to several factors, all of which facilitate the well-being of families. To begin with, NPs order and conduct laboratory tests on individuals to ascertain their health status. Secondly, they interpret diagnostic tests and prescribe the necessary therapies. Also, they educate and counsel patients on the issues pertaining to their health. They facilitate disease prevention by administering approved preventive drugs. Epidemics and antimicrobial resistance are handled through the collaboration of NPs with other key health care professionals. Research and surveillance systems at the health facility levels are used by NPs to develop and advance health care strategies. They are the drivers of sustainable health and well-being of the society.
