Introduction
Bone health is essential since bones play many roles in one's body, such as protecting organs and providing body structure. Bones are continuously changing according to age up to a point where people start losing bone mass than they gain. This paper will look at Mrs. Law's case study, determine nutrients that are missing in her diet, any dietary concerns, and if Mrs. Law is getting appropriate minerals and nutrients.
Bone Health Nutrients Missing in Mrs. Law ‘s Diet
Calcium is one of the nutrients that was missing in Mrs. Law’s diet since it's a significant building block of the bone tissue (“American Bone Health,” 2017). Aging people like Mrs. Laws need to take more calcium since their body’s absorption efficiency increases. She should have incorporated dairy products such as milk rather than coffee and green vegetables such as broccoli and curly kale. The soft drinks and caffeine used by Mrs. Laws increase the loss of calcium. Additionally, potassium and phosphorous were also not present in Mrs. Law's diet. Potassium sources such as fruits and vegetables help in neutralizing acids that result from the body's metabolic processes (Grodner, Escott-Stump & Dorner, 2019). phosphorous sources such as legumes, whole grains, and animal products would also help neutralize acidic foods that would be harmful to the bones (“American Bone Health,” 2017).
Dietary Concerns
Mrs. Laws should minimize the excessive intake of caffeine and soda. The soft drinks and caffeine used by Mrs. Laws increase the loss of calcium. Additionally, she should increase the intake of Vitamin D and Magnesium sources in her everyday diet. Vitamin D sources are egg yolks, fatty fish, and fortified foods such as cereals, while magnesium include seeds such as chia seeds, legumes, and also avocado in maintaining healthy bones (“American Bone Health,” 2017).
Mrs. Laws Vitamin and Mineral Intake according to her Age and Current Condition
Mrs. Law is not getting enough and appropriate minerals and vitamins for her current condition and age. In as much as caffeine contains vitamin B2, B3, and B5 and helps reduce the risk of diabetes, excess intake of it, as evidenced in Mrs. Law's diet, leaches calcium from bones, making them weak (“American Bone Health,” 2017). Mrs. Law's diet does not have any dairy foods, meat, nuts, or vegetables that provide iron and calcium in bones considering her age and current condition.
Conclusion
Bone health can be promoted by ensuring enough and appropriate nutrients and mineral incorporation in one's diet. In the case of Mrs. Law, she should ensure to boost calcium and vitamin D intake to strengthen her bones and also fasten the healing process from the surgery.
