The DACA program initiated in 2012 has protected thousands of illegal immigrants in the United States from deportation (Shar & Davis, 2017). DACA has enabled young adults brought into America as children to reside with their families in the country, access jobs, education, and social security numbers (Shar & Davis, 2017). However, President Trump’s administration has ascertained that DACA was implemented illegally since the former President, Barack Obama, circumvented the legislature and implemented DACA by executive orders without seeking congressional approval as per the US constitution (Shar & Davis, 2017). President Trump continues to advocate for DACA’s policy change to ensure clear, transparent, and consistent enforcement of laws against all categories and classes of foreigners (Shar & Davis, 2017). After the Supreme Court ruled out Trump’s decision to end DACA, he called out to Congress to enforce a program that complied with the regulations, the rule of law, and the social norms of the United States. He advocated for a program that follows all the procedures of policy implementation that includes approval of the legislative branch (Shar & Davis, 2017).

After the initiation of the DACA program, an eligibility criterion was formulated to set the guideline on the qualities that applicants should have to meet to be a recipient like being in America illegally after the applicant entry in the country before their sixteenth birthday, living in America since 2007, and not convicted of a felony (Pimienta & Morse, 2020). States have taken various strategies in the implementation of the DACA program. A significant number of states such as California, Illinois, New York, New Jersey, and Maryland have complied with the policy and granted state benefits such as drivers’ licenses, health insurance, professional licenses, and in-state tuition bills to the DACA beneficiaries Pimienta & Morse, 2020).

Conclusion

Conclusively, the DACA program supports and protects the unregistered immigrants that illegally came into the country as young children. Nevertheless, President Donald Trump advocates for policy change through enforcement to ensure the immigration program implemented complies with the nation’s rule of law. Moreover, numerous states have implemented the program by granting professional licenses, in-state tuition bills, driver’s licenses, and health insurance to the DACA recipients.
