Introduction

Good morning, everyone. We are all gathered here today to celebrate the life of Milly Ambrose. For those who do not know me, I am Sharon and Milly was my grandmother or mama as we all called her. Other people also referred her as Ms. Milly, and a few of her closest friends called her Ambrozine.

Family History

Milly Ambrose was born on May 6, 1928, to Dora McFarlane, mother, and Joseph Ambrose, father. She was a fourth born in a family of five. Her siblings are the late Lorenzo Ambrose, the late Lucille Ambrose, the late Randolph Ambrose, and Sylvia Ambrose. She later got married to Canute Roach, and she was blessed with one child, Beverly Jhagroo. She was also blessed with six grandchildren, Richard, Mark, Steve, Paul, Charmine and I, Sharon. She also had 17 great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren, three daughters-in-law, and two sons-in-law.

Life Events

I can describe her childhood as humble. She went to Montego Bay to do her childhood studies. Once she was done with studies at Montego Bay, she moved to Kingston. She was a lucky woman because she met our grandfather, Canute Roach. After some time, mama and our mother moved to a small town known as Race Track, Claredon. They stayed there for many years as they try to make ends meet. However, after some time, our mother died at a time that we did not expect, and mama had to take care of us after her demise. This was not an easy task for mama at all. But since mama was such a strong woman, she had to do it, and she did it so well. People could not even tell the challenges she had been facing since our mother's death. She did not have even someone who could support her sometimes so that she can break the monotony. She loved us so much and also went the extra mile by making a lot of sacrifices for us to survive. I remember there were tough days when mama could go to bed hungry but always ensured that we had something in our stomach. Indeed, she was a remarkable lady.

The Unique and Special Qualities of Mama

Mama was a compassionate, dedicated in her work and also selfless woman. We never had that one day she had gone to the streets to beg for money. She worked for it and made sure that at the end of the day, we were able to have something in our stomach. Even if she had nothing at all to provide, she would do her miracles, and at the end of the day, we could have something small for our stomach. I appreciate the fact that she stood by us all that time until we were all grown and knew the tactics of surviving.

Just like any parent, she was a mentor, teacher, and a role model for all of us. She always taught us to be satisfied with all that we had and never to be envious of other people. Mama wanted us to be good, and she always encouraged us to choose our friends wisely because she knew that some friends could lead us in the wrong direction. She never believed in having many friends in her life but only a few whom she could be able to trust and rely on.

She was a Christian, and most of her times, she spent reading her Bible. She was an introvert also, and she had few friends whom she could rely on them and trusted each other so well. She was never worried whenever she shared her secrets. When she could find us together and taking care of each other, she was so happy about it.

I can truly testify that mama was a wise and bright lady. Most of the time, we could go to her and seek advice about specific issues. Most of her advice was in the form of proverbs, and we had to listen keenly and then have time to meditate. One of the proverbs she could tell us is that 'you carry the horse to the well, but you cannot force it to drink.' Unless you could understand the real meaning, then you were able to benefit from such. Sometimes we could disturb her, and one of her favorite proverbs she could tell us is that 'kiss me titi and clear off.'

She was proud of herself. While we spent time together at home, she always mentioned the fact that nobody could be in her shoes because she was good looking and had a nice figure that every man in the streets could admire her. The men were complimenting on her shape, but she did not even get a chance to also talk to those men because she was always a busy woman. She was beautiful and had an excellent shape until the last day she was with us physically.

Mama's Last Days

Mama was vibrant and jovial until her last minute. Sometimes she could sit in the chair, listen to some music and dance to the beat of the song. Nothing could bother except the fact that she was lamenting that she did not want porridge anymore and she needed salt and sugar in her diet. She was diagnosed with hypertension and diabetes, and after her diagnosis, she was not allowed to take particular food in her diet. This is the time when things started changing, and new things had to be introduced in her life.

Her sister, Sylvia Ambrose, was her favorite person. They could spend time together talking about some stories and made jokes that nobody could even understand. Perhaps this was a way of making themselves happy. She never wanted to depend on anybody also though we loved her, and we could do anything for her and see her get better day by day. I was lucky to have spent a month and a half with my grandmother. One of the evenings, as she was taking a shower, she told me, "Being old is nice, and it is time for me to go home." I would never want her to make this kind of comments because for sure it broke my heart. I knew her as a strong woman in my life, and she could fight until the end.

Goodbye Mama

Goodbye, dear our mama. We loved you very much, and we will miss you, dearly. You were such a good person, and you left good memories in our heart. We are so proud of you because you never disappointed us. But now you are gone, mama, and I hope we will meet on the other side. I know you are alright and you are in a beautiful resting place. I know you would not want us to weep and stress ourselves, but we are strong enough for this mama, and we are getting better each day rest in peace, mama!
