Introduction
Today, the nursing professionality is amongst the many specialization professionals whereby the different nursing practitioners are responsible for various activities and hold different positions. For instance, in my place employment, there are different nursing professionality positions that different practitioners hold. The leadership, education, and informatics are amongst the many posts that play a significant in nursing and in the strive to deliver quality health care. However, in this paper, I will interview two nurses from my place of employment, provide details concerning the title of their work, educational background, and their aspirations concerning the field of nursing. Also, I will give peer-reviewed journals concerning the nursing profession position.
In interviewing two nurses from my place of employment, I gathered various shreds of information concerning their employment role. The official title of their position is (informatics nurse specialist). For instance, according to the first nurse, she is responsible for collecting and gathering information on the promotion of patient-centric care, as well as researching modern health care practices and policies. On the other hand, the second nurse is a director whose responsibilities revolve around the activity to provide healthcare management consulting services to the clients. Some of the functions in specific include strategic, operational, financial, and technological solutions to the clients with the aim of improving service delivery. In consideration to the professionality of the two nurses, they played a significant role in making strategic decisions concerning new technology investments and the different means of adopting those solutions to their unique environment as well as achieving the optimal accomplishments.
Informatics Nurse Specialists Educational Background
Additionally, to become an informatics nurse specialist, there is are different educational backgrounds required. Currently, there is an informatics certification available in different nursing schools. Similarly, to acquire the nursing informatics title, there are other steps. For example, an individual need to earn a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)degree, since it is generally required. Through this coursework, it takes up to four years of study; however, individuals holding a bachelor's degree in a field other than nursing and registered nurse (RN) with an acquired associate degree in nursing (ADN) can complete accelerated programs in almost a year and six months.
On the other hand, after acquiring a degree in the field of nursing, one needs to obtain a registered nurse (RN) license from approved nursing institutions. People with an associate degree in nursing (ADN), or a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) are qualified to undertake the national examination to become a registered nurse. Some states may require additional licensing requirements. Moreover, in the educational background of the informatics nurse specialist, further education is critical. Some of the supplemental educational programs should include a study in database management, software design, and computer system analysis as well. Through the programs, they maintain that the registered nurse acquires relevant information on how to use technology to support clinical decisions, manage regulatory requirements, and maintain a quality and security standards of the patient's health records or history.
Finally, to acquire the informatics nursing certification, for example, the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) requires a registered nurse to hold a BSN or ADN and completed more than two years of nursing practice.
Educational Background of the Nurses
Nonetheless, in consideration of the educational background of the two nurses (interviewees) they had different educational experiences. According to the first nurse, she acquired a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) and shifted into other BSN courses focusing on patient care, health assessment, and pharmacology. Within the different focus in the field of nursing, she worked in various programs for three years. Since she had already obtained a registered nurse license, she decided to seek additional education with the evolving healthcare sector in different nations. She enrolled for a master's program in informatics nursing where she acquired knowledge on the different ways to adapt technology to facilitate healthcare standards and goals. In the conclusion of the program, she obtained certification as an informatics nurse specialist.
Moreover, she acquired this position after coming across a job advertisement requiring an informatics nurse specialist and applied for the interview. Since she had met all the requirements, she was fortunate to acquire the position. In addition to the duties and role in this administrative position, the nurse is responsible for managing, interpreting, and communicating the information flowing in and out of the healthcare facility since the significant purpose includes improving the quality of healthcare provided. The nurse is also responsible for identifying the different areas where nursing practice needs to be enhanced and utilizes technology to flag specific positions where improvement is necessary.
Correspondingly, according to the second nurse, he acquired an associate degree in nursing and completed accelerated programs in 18months and later acquired a registered nurse license. In addition to the clinical background as a registered nurse, he earned ten years of experience working a healthcare software vendor. Since he was legible for the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) certification tests, he acquired the nursing informatics certification. Additionally, he received this administrative position after a promotion. As the overall nursing informatics administrator, the nurse earned additional education and was promoted to work in this administrative position as an informatics nurse specialist. Also, some of the roles in this position, he is solely responsible for overseeing the practices in the healthcare facility and making a new strategic decision concerning new technology especially with their role in the emergency rooms. In this role, the nurse maintains that there are adequate nurses to patient staffing ratios during the busy hours in the healthcare facility.
Initiatives the Nurses Would Like to Develop
In consideration to the aspiration of the two nurses I interviewed, they had a similar idea concerning what initiatives and programs they would implement and develop in they had more help and time. According to the nurses, they believe that nursing informatics is not about technology and computers, but it is about offering quality health care as well as maintain every nursing competencies required in healthcare delivery. One of the major initiatives they thought was critical is information and change management. The healthcare system is changing daily as new technology is developing and shifting the delivery of services. As a result, change managements seek to develop an understanding concerning how individuals and organizations react and act upon change since it determines the failure and success of an initiative. In nursing informatics, information and change management are critical since the nursing informatics professionals rely on information daily. In as much as healthcare delivery is involved, it does not seek the acquiring of drugs by patients but aims to ensure that every patient receives the care they need.
Similarly, nursing informatics is responsible for ensuring improvement in the quality of care provided by healthcare practitioners and maintain that every nursing professional adheres to the different requirements of nursing. It acts as a manager of the entire healthcare facility. Thus, information management and change management are the various initiatives the two nurses would develop if they had the time and support.
Nursing Informatics Certification
Today, the field of nursing is providing different perceptions concerning nursing informatics. According to the article by Nagle et al. (2017), there are various details concerning the role of nursing informatics specialists. In the section, Nagle et al. (2017), derives that the nursing informatics professionals have been evolving over the last five decades are new roles develop. In this literature, there are various details I found concerning the positions of administrative informatics nursing specialist. In consideration of this position (nursing informatics officer), different competencies are surrounding its existence. According to Nagle et al. (2017), nurses have the option to pursue additional education since the specializations and credentials vary at different levels with the inclusion of graduate specialization and specialty certification. For example, in the development of the position of nursing informatics officer, the nurses achieve the credibility and legitimacy following their manure of the competence of their skills and knowledge as well as recognizing nursing practice and healthcare.
Although the valuing of these positions may remain limited among healthcare provider facilities, it is essential to note that certification of nursing informatics officer is necessary at different levels. The position of nursing informatics is one that holds numerous titles; however, the certification is almost the same. For instance, with the titles, "nursing informatics specialist" and "informatics nurse" there are a few applied to nurses working in this field.
Nursing Informatics Roles
In the literature, it offers that as a result of the growing needs for healthcare organizations and due to the evolving technology, nursing informatics is critical. Nagle et al. (2017), strive to provide the various occurrences of the evolution of nursing informatics role, the focus, and scope of practice, and the anticipates responsibilities along with opportunities in the future. According to the article, the nursing informatics specialist position is responsible for various occurrence in the healthcare setting today. In the past, the role of informatics nurses assumed the oversight of organizational workload measurement, systems educators, among others. However, the roles and job titles are changing with the development of new qualifications. As derives in the article, it is the role of informatics nurses to ensure that they influence, contribute and mold the actualization of the organization's goal of knowledge management. In summary of the finding of this article, I would derive that are various evolution in the field of nursing today especially in nursing informatics. With the development of formalized training for the nurses interested in informatics, the specialty of nursing informatics is evolving and gaining different recognition by various jurisdictions both locally and internationally.
Nursing Informatics Certification
Nonetheless, in another peer-reviewed article by Cummins et al. (2016), there is a clear pathway to certification for the informatics nurses. Within this article, (Cummins et al., 2016) provides that informatics nurse specialists do not require any formal information or training but verifies the skills and knowledge at different basic levels. According to Cummins et al. (2016), physician informatics certification revolves around the validation of skills and knowledge at an advanced level which requires the documentation of experience and nursing practice which also seeks completion of accredited two-year nursing practice in clinical informatics.
