Various health policies have been set in the health sector. This includes multiple decisions, plans, and actions which help the health sector achieve their care goals to the patients. These policies are used as a communication tool to different members of a health firm. It helps the members know what is expected of them in their various tasks. Single health policy can achieve several goals within the health sector. Some of these policies need change to satisfy the targeted customer who is the patient.
The mental health policy is one of the strategies that need change. This policy is aimed at ensuring that every citizen in America lives a meaningful life and perform essential roles despite their mental health challenges. This is only possible if those individuals receive the care and support they require. The mental health system in the United States of America has not performed their role as expected towards delivering satisfactory services to the person with a mental health condition (Kleinpell, 2015). Most of these patients are disregarded, forgotten and even detached. The few patients who receive the health services they need, only access the services after an extended period and during which they suffer and struggle with these conditions. Lack of people to show any care and concern to this people leads to various results. Some individuals become homeless, some drop out of schools and even worse others commit suicide when they cannot deal with the situation anymore.
The main reason why the mental health sector faces a lot of challenges in delivering the best services to its psychological patient is the lack of knowledge. The people with a mental health condition fail to understand that they have an equal right to access the medical services they require hence they end up suffering. They also fail to know that they have a right to make decisions concerning their lives (Grob, 2014). Majority citizens also fail to recognize that mental patient is part of the community. These are the people that fail to show care and support to the various mental patients since they do not belong to their families or are not friends. This act made the patients feel neglected and disowned subjecting them to more suffering.
To transform the mental health sector, the following proposed changes should be considered; an education system should be introduced to help both the people with a mental health condition and the community on mental conditions. The education system should ensure that the people with a mental health condition understand their rights. They should be educated on the various benefits they should be getting from the health sector. The community should be trained on how to treat multiple people within the society especially those with mental problems. They should be educated on the importance of showing care and supporting those with mental issues even if they are not family or friends.
Another consideration that should be made is coming up with a committee that is categorically meant for those patients with mental problems. This committee will deal with any challenges arising in the psychological sector at a primary level. This will ensure that most of the patient's issues are addressed, and they will feel catered for and ensure satisfactory services to them. The committee an also be trusted with promoting community programs that will involve programs such as peer talks. This can be used to help those suffering to feel part of the community, to feel free to talk and express themselves (Lereya, 2015). Through these programs, they get hopes; they get to know they are not alone and those afraid of getting the medical services they need can comfortably come out and access them.
When it comes to the implementation of the changes, the new policy should be communicated to all health centres in the United States of America. This policy should be established adequately among health care and human service professionals, private and public medical care providers (Grob, 2014). They should analyse and comprehend what is required of them while dealing with people with a mental health condition. It is also essential to create awareness of this new policy to the community at large to ensure that they know what is required of them as far as mental care services are concerned. Once the system is fully understood by all the stakeholders in the mental sector, it will be easy to deliver better services to the patients. As a result, there will be reduced number of school dropouts, homelessness, and suicides. It will be easy to develop a community with more responsible people who can perform their expected roles as required.
Conclusion
The leading champions of this policy include the advocates, mental health practitioners, and health providers. These people thoroughly understand the mental health system, and hence they have details on every challenge facing the mental sector. They can, therefore, work together in implementing this new policy towards delivering improved services to the people with a mental health condition. These people have a significant influence in the health sector since they are at the top management. They are the people who make significant decisions in the health sector, and these decisions are seen as crucial ones and must be adhered to. I voted for the right individual in office whom I believe will push for the implementation of this new policy.
