Introduction
Apart from what was discussed by my colleague regarding ways of disseminating information aimed at preventing tobacco smoking in the target audience, I want to add that the same information can reach the same individuals through brochures (Eaves et al., 2016; Shaik et al., 2016). Brochures allow health professionals, such as nurses, to approach the target individuals with credible sources of information about tobacco smoking and avoid provoking defensive reactions from them (Eaves et al., 2016). In this case, a practitioner needs to provide information related to tobacco and detrimental impacts on the body or health to enable individuals to understand that tobacco consumption has adverse health outcomes.
There are various benefits attributed to the use of brochures in the sharing of health information to the target population. Most importantly, it has been established that the distribution of educational brochures are crucial in raising awareness regarding a particular health condition e.g., the impact of smoking on health Bester et al., 2016). For brochures to achieve intended goals, it should contain the signs and symptoms exhibited by patients following a particular behavior such as tobacco smoking (Arian et al., 2016; Nascimento et al., 2015).
It is crucial for healthcare professionals to understand the characteristics of useful health brochures. First, the information found in the booklet should be capable of telling a story. That is, it should provide detailed information about tobacco smoking and health implications. Second, apart from creating awareness, the information presented in the brochures should persuade the readers to adopt healthy behaviors. Therefore, it should be crafted in a persuasive language rather than repeating the same information found on health books and articles.
