My Volunteer experience at the Daughters of the American Revolution was exceptional. I worked on a rational basis across three chapters which include, Texas, Arlington and Stephenville. I decided to serve in the three chapters in order to get a favourable opportunity to network and interact with different people. I interacted with different staff at Daughters of the American Revolution but two of them were outstanding to me; Meg Anderson who is a Media Consultant and also an Historian and Nancy Davies who is a media consultant. I found myself and Meg Anderson sharing a lot in common since she is an Historian and I would like to major in History as well. Another person that I formed an unbreakable bond with is Nancy Davis who works in the department of Courtesy Outreach .Nancy Davies helped me a lot during the orientation. Her personality is interesting since she is courteous and amusing. Nancy is good at multitasking, an attribute which inspired me to learn different operations across all the departments of Daughters of the American Revolution. The two friends also enable me to learn more about the organization by conducting an interview with them.
The Daughters of the American Revolution has three major departments which include special projects committee, advertisement department, and Media Consultancy. The three departments provided the best opportunity for me to learn about the operation and functionality of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Moreover, the interactive working environment presented by the organization enabled me to develop essential leadership and public relations skills which will promote my career growth while according me the necessary leadership skills as a university professor. It is paramount to discuss the activities undertaken under each department to ensure a comprehensive and a reliable reflective account of my volunteer experience at the Daughters of the American Revolution.
The special projects committee is the department of the organization which is concerned with the organization and the management of the special events and activities within the Daughters of the American Revolution. Mostly, the Projects Committee is concerned with the issuance of awards and certificates to best performing students in both academic and social affairs hence exemplifying a holistic life. After enrolling in the organization as a volunteer staff, I was assigned to the role of identifying the best-performing students in the 5th and 8th grades for the purposes of assigning awards in Arlington chapter. The Committee Chairperson in charge of assigning roles to the members assigned me to different schools to identify and select the qualified students for the purposes of awarding. To simplify my work, I collaborated with the schools' heads of the curriculum in order to access performance records for the students in different categories. Therefore, performance evaluation and selection of the best students was done by the respective curriculum teachers since they could access the performance conveniently. Apart from the performance evaluation and student selection, I also represented the committee in different awarding ceremonies and spoke on behalf of the committee chairperson. Such honors and privileges enabled me to develop remarkable public speaking skills while sharpening my speechwriting and delivery skills.
The advertising department is the division which is responsible for the origination and dissemination of information within the organization. After serving on the special committee, I also applied to join the advertisement and communication department at Texas Chapter in order to experience the nature of operations at the department as well. Initially, I subordinated myself to the content creators of the advertisement department in order to learn the process of content creation. In advertisement, the content creation is the first step, then media selection and the release of the advertisement message. The selection of the advertisement media was majorly evaluated on the basis of coverage, reliability and the cost based on the available advertisement message. After learning, the process involved, I collaborated with the advertisement team to help in the content generation, development of the advertisement message and helped in the evaluation and selection of the advertisement media. Moreover, I participated in creation and distribution of flyers which advertised and informed the community about major events by Daughters of the American Revolution.
While I was serving at the advertisement and communication department, I decided to shift to the department of media consultancy where I joined the Texas media team to ensure instant feedback and monitoring of Daughters of the American Revolution social network accounts. My work was to respond to customers inquiries and continually update the public about the events of the organization. Due to excellent monitoring and instant feedback, I was promoted to the position of social network administrator with the authority to delete irresponsible users and accept invitations from interested parties to join our social network platforms.
