Introduction

A personal nursing philosophy revolves around understanding the principles, values and beliefs and their relations to direct practice within the nursing profession (Whitman & Rose, 2003). My nursing philosophy is essentially characterized by empathetic, culturally sensitive and holistic approach to care for all the patients as well as their relatives. To me, nursing is all about compassion and the ability to understand the scientific, emotional and physical aspects of my patients. In my nursing profession, I feel the urge to develop some personal commitment to gain more experience and knowledge within the nursing profession.

Four Basic Paradigms

My personal nursing philosophy is anchored on four basic paradigms i.e. health, environment, nursing and people. For instance, I believe that the nursing profession is centered on people and that healthcare provision involves the whole patient rather than a single health concern or illness. Such a holistic approach to nursing permits a consideration of all the facets of the life of a patient thus ensuring quality life for all my patients.

Again, since the human beings form the center for the nursing profession, it is essential to look at both the individuals and the environment in which they live. It is crucial to understand the environment in which they live since the patients are parts of the communities in which they live. Such communities significantly influence the lives of the patients thus it could be challenging to separate the patients from their immediate environments.

Moreover, I also believe on the dynamic nature of healthcare and that its existence revolves around illness and wellness in response to the environmental conditions (Whitman & Rose, 2003). As such, health is centered on the quality of life. For instance, within my nursing profession, I have always encountered patients that have had suffered acute and chronic mental and physical health conditions resulting from lifetime trauma.

Patient Focused Approach

Most importantly, I believe that nursing must involve the communities and individuals who are working together to ensure the wellbeing of the patients. In my daily professional operations, I experience various situations that call for my ability to make meaning out of the situations of the patients, for example, obtaining the of feelings or things that could not be touched, heard, observed or imagined. As such, I believe that having a relationship with the patients should involve active involvement of the nurses.

I believe that the process of nursing involves a patient-focused, holistic and a problem solving approach in their relationship with various patients and their respective families. All the individuals have divergent needs that call for different action plans (Whitman & Rose, 2003). As such, I believe that healthcare should be planned to meet the needs of each persons involved. The nursing process is one of the best ways for catering to the specific needs of all patients.

Conclusion

My personal belief system is to be caring and compassionate to the patients. I believe that in nursing one needs to have an overwhelming amount of care and compassion to their patients and their families. This is because the nurses not only care for the physical needs of the patients but to their emotional wellbeing as well (Whitman & Rose, 2003). I also seek to participate in some meaningful encounters and establish authentic relationship between the patients and their families. I also tend to understand the conditions faced by patients and the various families they come from to determine appropriate health interventions.
