Online shopping has gained tremendous popularity in recent years. Many people have opted to shop online instead of physically visiting the stores. I do most of my shopping online, especially on Amazon. This is because Amazon delivers my shopping on time and their transparency exceeds that of most other online stores. Amazon is transparent both in display of their inventory as well as in their policies, such as their return policy. Their return policy states that, the customer can return the purchased goods in the first 30 days of delivery if they are defective. In this period, the customer is due for free shipping of the purchased product and is entitled to a full refund of the money spent (Jane K 9)
The boom of online shopping has many effects, both good and bad. It has provided a very convenient way of shopping for me, from the comfort of my home. Online shopping allows me to browse from a wide range of products while allowing me to compare prices and quality. This would be tiresome if I were to do this in a physical store. The prices of commodities in online stores are generally lower than those in physical shops. This is because these stores are not subject to costs like rent and employee salaries. Online shops do not impose a sales tax on customers. This is because only businesses with a physical address are required to charge a sales tax (Yun Ji 350). I have also found it easier to give my honest reviews on the products I buy without being asked for explanations by salespeople. Shopping online has helped me save the money I spend on gas. I have also been able to avoid the crowds at the stores by shopping from home.
I have experienced various challenges while shopping online. First, some online stores are not genuine. They are out to scam unsuspecting customers. I have therefore learned to look at customer reviews of online stores before placing orders from them. I also prefer stores like Amazon who have the pay on delivery option. Second, I experience challenges on buying items such as clothes since I cannot try them on or inspect them. This has caused the delivery of wrong sizes and wrong shades of makeup products in the past. Third, some online stores impose a shipping fee on returned products, even if the products delivered were defective (Yun Ji 350). Fourth, I do not get a sales assistant to talk help in their purchase. This is unlike a physical store where there are sales assistants to help with questions and concerns that the customers may have regarding the products.
Conclusion
When online shopping was first introduced, many people were skeptical of whether they would be getting quality for their money. Over time, however, it has gained popularity, and a significant percentage of the population has adopted for this method of shopping. I do most of my shopping on Amazon. It has given me access to a wide range of products, helped me save on the cost of driving to the store for shopping. It has also enabled me to keep on the values of shopping as products on Amazon are cheaper than those in physical stores. Online shopping has also contributed to reducing crowding in physical stores as more people now shop from home. As more people buy online, traffic on the roads could also decrease significantly. This will, therefore, promote a healthy environment as fewer fumes will be emitted by motor vehicles on the streets.
