In the wake of technological advancement, nurses are faced with multiple ethical dilemmas especially when providing care to the uninsured patients. Notably, the uninsured patients are less likely to access the regular outpatient care which makes them be hospitalized for conditions which could be avoided. Indeed, the application of the MORAL model while making ethical decisions is necessary as it helps the nurses to for fair care for their patients. Besides, the family and other professionals such as therapy providers and social workers play a critical role in providing the vital tools that promote the overall health of a patient. Therefore, the application of the various steps in the MORAL model is important in providing the necessary actions to the available cases in health care.The first step of the MORAL model of acquiring the essential facts is critical in ensuring there is the provision of quality care to the patients. The health care practitioners should not jump into conclusions but should take adequate time to research to get answers to the core questions. Although, it is sometimes difficult to obtain all the answers because of the ethical issues surrounding health cases it is critical to gather as many facts as possible before one starts to make any decision to handle the patient situation. In the case of Karen Quinlan who unexpectedly survived the removal of her respiratory, it was essential to gather all the facts in the case before making any assumption (Tuvesson, & Lutzen, 2017). Indeed, life-sustaining treatment decision should be supported with multiple facts to avoid a restriction that would endanger the life of a patient.
Consequently, achieving the essential definition of a specific ethical problem is vital in the promoting of health care. Indeed, it is vital for the health care providers to have an ethical basis of every case they want to focus on. Nonetheless, a case of one patient may have many ethical issues, but it is necessary to focus on one issue at a time. For instance, in the case of Nancy Cruzan which reached the Supreme Court as a result of her failure in feeding patients with tubes would have been avoided if the health providers defined the ethical issue appropriately (Arras, 2017). The essential definition would have helped in focusing on the issue and involving the critical stakeholders such as the family members.
Additionally, the MORAL model explains the importance of identifying the key stakeholders as well as identifying both the positive and negative consequences. It is necessary for the health providers to research the perspective of the affected individuals to help in determining the short-term and long-term consequences. For example, in the case of Schiavo, the hospital failed to provide the essential environment to Ms. Schiavo's husband and the parents which resulted to a false impression of the legal principles used in the case (Barlem, & Ramos, 2015). Hence, it is critical to involve the vital stakeholders in every case to ensure there is success in the delivery of the essential services.
In conclusion, the application of the MORAL model is essential in offering the necessary actions in health care. First, acquiring the essential facts is critical in ensuring there is the provision of quality care to the patients. Equally, obtaining the right definition of a specific ethical problem is vital in encouraging the provision of appropriate health care. The focus on a specific ethical issue is essential in providing quality care. It is also important to recognize the essential stakeholders to establish the positive and negative consequences. Therefore, the delivery of quality health care requires the effective application of the MORAL model to help in ethical decision making.
