Introduction
The oceans have the most massive creatures that has ever lived on the Earth. Different unique Ocean creatures in the marine environment serve as an essential economic and social growth in our community currently. Ocean serves as a critical part of the Earth ecosystem, as it is a source of biodiversity, life, and food. Over 40% of the world population is believed to have lived within 100KM from the coastal lines (An Overview of Ocean Pollution 2016). Adequate management of ocean resources, therefore, is a crucial measure in securing the food security structure. However, Ocean pollution prevention is not only essential in the current life but to the future children to come.
Importance of Preventing Ocean Pollution
Employment Opportunity
According to the survey done by FAO, over 56 million people are directly employed by the fisheries and the aquaculture currently (Jacques, 2017). There are also follow up activities that have used various people; these activities include, handling, distribution, and processing activities. Aquatic nature also acts as the source of tourist attraction site; by this, it both provides both employment and revenue to the country. The Aquatic activities also act as a source of livelihood to the families as it finance over 660 million people that was over 12 percent of the current world population (Jacques, 2017).
Source of Food
The ocean is an essential source of food in our current society today. According to FAO, over 80% of the planet population directly consume the fish product on the planet. The fish provides over 20% of the protein to over 80% population on Earth. The protein content of fish contributes a healthy to most livelihood on Earth (Jacques, 2017). Ocean also serves as a source of the energy renewal structure. The ocean current provides tides which are converted to energy source used in the production of electricity. Conservation of the ocean from pollution will not only increase the level of food but will enhance the effective productivity of the energy source to the environment structure.
Regulation of Climate
Ocean also helps in the management of the climatic structure of our ecological system. When the ocean water is heated by the sun's rays, the water in the ocean evaporates and condense, which forms clouds that bring water back. The Ocean also absorbs over a quarter of the carbon dioxide that is put in the atmosphere structure by animals. Oceans also absorb over 90% of the heat in the atmosphere, a factor that helps in controlling the global warming effect (Sigler, 2014). However, without the cooling effect of temperature by the ocean, the world temperature would be unstable for life. Additionally, these facts make it essential for the Ocean to be conserved from pollution effects in our environment.
Medicinal Impact
Various scientific interventions have been done on the aquatic creatures in justification that they can produce medicinal substance. The marine invertebrates produce antibiotics that are very effective in curing cancer-related ailments. Aquatic creatures such as horseshoe crab, marine bacteria and seaweeds have some of the aquatic animals that have been discovered to have useful medical importance (Sigler, 2014). Saving the ocean environment from pollution will boost the medical benefits obtained from the marine environment. Water substance also reduces the rate of anxiety in an individual. An ocean environment helps in bringing a positive feeling to an individual in one perspective to the other.
Human activities are number one factors that affect Aquatic life in one perspective to the other. Overfishing is a great threat to the aquatic population in most water bodies. There should be strict policies that will help in controlling the fishing rate. According to the survey that was done indicated that over 80% of the pollution in the Oceans are channeled from the land (Sindermann, 1995). Plastic depositions are number one pollutants that destroy the ocean environment. The climatic change also affects the marine species in the background. Industrial pollution also contaminates the water body killing aquatic species and destruction of the ecosystem such as the coral reef structures.
Causes of Ocean Pollution
Sewage
Sewage Pollution is one of the vital disasters that contaminates the Ocean waters. In most of the instance, the sewage water can enter Ocean through either sewage pipes, drainages, or river sources (Jacques, 2017). The following channels also contribute to the transportation of mineral substance to the ocean. Chemicals released from the sewage leads to the destruction of the ocean ecosystem by reducing the ocean oxygen levels. Ocean contamination also destroys plant life in the sea and reduction of the seawater levels. Sewage contamination kills both plants and animals in the sea.
Industrial Toxic Chemicals
The industrial chemical waste is the number one universal waste that directly pollutes the ocean. The directly dumping of hazardous liquid chemicals affects the marine creatures leading to severe destruction of their ecosystem. On the other hand, Industrial chemicals also raise the heat temperature in the ocean, a factor that is referred to as Thermal pollution (Jacques, 2017). Increase in temperature will affect the animals and plants, which will eventually contribute to the destruction of the creatures.
Land Runoffs
Land runoff is a common source of ocean pollution currently. The process happens when the water infiltrates the soil to its maximum extent. When this activity happens, ocean water is usually polluted by human-made wastes, fertilizers, pesticides, petroleum, and various soil contaminants (Causes and Effects of Ocean Pollution That Are Destroying Our Planet 2019). This wastes can be led to the creation of dead zones where there will be no severe activities.
Large Oil Spillage
Ship pollution is one of the frequent pollutants that contaminate Ocean waters. This happens during oil spillage process. When the crude oil spills, it usually lasts for a year, and it suffocates marine creatures to death. However, since it is hard to clean the crude oil, it may stay there for years and years without any movement.
Ocean Mining
Another Ocean pollution in ocean mining in the deep sea. Various ocean mining sites drill for gold, silver, and bronze. Deep-sea mining causes an effect on the lowest levels of the water structure, a factor that causes ocean toxicity. Ocean mining also causes leaking, corrosion, and sever oil spillage a factor that hinders the ecosystem of a particular region.
Effects of Oceans Pollution
There are various effects that Ocean pollution causes in marine life. One of the impacts of ocean pollution is that it kills the ocean creatures. Oil pollution kills marine animals by locking their breathing structure. Secondly, spillage of oil blocks the sunlight from reaching the surface of the water; this affects the growth of the coral reefs. When the Ocean water is polluted, there is a severe reduction of the level of oxygen in the water surface, a factor that hinders both plants and animal survival. Ocean pollution also hinders the reproduction process of plants and animals; these chemicals are hazardous and destroys the genetic structure of the creatures living in the water. Contamination of water bodies also affects human health; this is because human beings also consume both animals living in contaminated water (Sigler, 2014). Humans will be attacked by severe infections such as cancer, congenital disabilities, and long term health complications.
Ways that help in saving the Ocean from Pollution
Introduction of Plastic Free Alternatives
In our current world, there is a massive purchase of plastic materials that, in one way or the other affects the nature of the Aquatic Environment. Oceans, on the other hand, face a massive threat from the plastic pollutions. According to the National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA), over 17.6 billion pounds of the plastics pollute water body's environment (Jacques, 2017). The government should enact policies which enforce organizations in using the plastic-free bags alternatives. However, there should be a ban on plastic materials such as plastics, water bottles, straws, plastic bags, coffee cups, and plastic-wrapped substances. The following measures will significantly reduce the level of Ocean pollution.
Carbon Footprints Reduction
Carbon dioxide makes our ocean to be acidic. This effect hinders the growth of coral reefs and the destruction of aquatic food in the sea. However, the following measures should be introduced in controlling carbon footprints in the water bodies. The members of the public should be encouraged in using bikes, walking, or use of public means of transportation rather than using their vehicles. The house lights, on the other hand, should be turned off to prevent the components of carbon from being emitted to the environment. On the other hand, during cold, it is recommended that you put your sweater instead of putting on your thermostat (Jacques, 2017). Lastly, we need to consume seafood with a lesser content of carbon dioxide in the environment compared to which have a significant content of protein substance.
Avoiding Ocean Harmful products
Various products are very harmful to aquatic species. Directly harmful services include unsustainable fishing methods and pollution systems. Some of the most toxic products that should not be used in the marine system include turtle shells, shark squalene, and jewelry substances. Plastics products are one of the poisonous substances, and this is because they do not decompose effectively in the water. On the other hand, these substances affect the productivity of the small species of fish in the ecosystem.
Eating a Sustainable Seafood Substance
As an individual, it is advisable to consume healthy seafood that is healthy for the wild fisheries substance. The government should conduct an effective awareness campaign that will educate the members of the public on suitable seafood to consume. There should be a program created in the televisions and social media on the appropriate and benefits of seafood to be consumed in a particular location. With the use of this technique in place, a country will be in a position to protect the life of the marine species ecosystem.
Ocean Exploration
When a person visits the ocean more often, he or she will be in the position to love and protect the ocean structure. Every person should develop a habit of visit any Ocean or Lake and learn how beautiful and lively the Ocean looks like. On the other hand, a person also should read and research on the marine animal's lifestyle; this will boost an individual interest in preserving the marine in the Ocean from pollution (Sindermann, 1995). Learning more about marine creatures also have a significant impact on their preservation efforts.
Sharing Ocean information with Family Friends and Coworkers
Share the news with every person about what is happening in the Ocean matters and lifestyle. The technique of sharing information about marine conservation policy will help people to understand the importance of the ocean. Sharing of great information about our environment conservation will help in creating a more magnificent ocean environment structure. Take an initiative to post the news on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter as a way to reach a larger volume of people in the environment. As an Individual, you also will be in a position to introduce public campaigns that educate people on the importance of preservation of the ocean environment.
Oceana Association
Oceana is an active public organization that is aimed at the conservation of ocean in our environment currently. The organization contains more than 800,000 members with over 200 countries in the country now (...
