Introduction
Chapter two of Judith Freidenberg's book gives an overview of people's what people say about Prince George's country. Therefore, this analytical report explains the terms to know in Chapter 2 and answers the questions written for the chapter.
The phrase, Immigrant Life Course Research Program (ILCRP), is established by Judith Freidenberg as an approach to understanding the inflow of immigrants in Maryland. Judith uses the ILCRP as an approach to seek a link between immigrant communities and her research (Freidenberg 74). The research in Chapter two involves talking to communities and understanding immigrant experiences. Hence, using ILCRP helps to document the experiences of communities living in Prince George's Maryland.
Judith Freidenberg says that "media is a centralizing agent of culture." The statement is of utmost importance in understanding the tools that have assisted in telling immigrant experiences. According to Freidenberg, media assists in connecting communities by telling stories (Freidenberg 49). Most of Freidenberg's research uses tools such as print media to tell the experiences of immigrants in Prince George County. Hence, media is a centralizing agent of culture because it connects people, thus bringing them close together.
The first part of Freidenberg's research into what people say about Price George County uses print media sources. Research into immigration overflows is always recorded in print media for public dissemination. Hence, Freidenberg relied on such print media sources to give insights on what people say about Prince George's county. Therefore, Freidenberg used Prince George's Sentinel and The Gazette as sources. Consequently, three significant points are learned from this study. First, native people's sentiments about immigration are different. While some people think that immigration will bring about negative outcomes such as insecurity, others are very welcoming to immigrants (Freidenberg 82). Secondly, the neighborhoods have changed due to immigration. According to the sources, most immigrants prefer living in the same area. Thus, most neighborhoods are of Hispanic communities. Thirdly, immigrants' experiences are fairly positive since most suggest they got a good reception from native communities.
The second part of Freidenberg's research incorporates what people say about Prince George County from public opinion directly. Freidenberg used business owners, school managers, and native residents as her sources. The sources were willing to give their opinion about Prince George County. Additionally, some immigrants were used as sources to talk about their experiences in the county. Three points of information are learned from this part of the study. The first point is the challenge in communication most immigrants experienced. Most immigrants describe their encounters with others as difficult due to the language barrier (Freidenberg 89). The second point learned is the low assessment of student performance. School managers in posited that performance was low because most immigrant students find it difficult to keep up with others. The third point learned is that public opinion about Prince George County is very positive. The sources responded with positive appreciation in the welcoming nature of immigrants to Prince George unlike other areas such as Frederick County.
Conclusion
In conclusion, Judith Freidenberg attempts to give insights into what people say about Prince George County using various sources. The print media sources suggest that the only difficulty encountered by immigrants is the language barrier. On the other hand, public opinion suggests that the welcoming nature of people is to be praised, but low performance in education is discouraging.
