By the end of the lesson the students should be able to explain what diversity is basing on their own understanding
By the end of the lesson the students should be able to identify various aspects in their surroundings that affiliate to diversity
State or Common Core Standards National Standards: Reading and analyzing texts to ensure comprehension of content.
Materials: Social studies textbook, a scripted story on diversity based on teachers own work, role play, group discussion and class discussion.
Objectives: By the end of the lesson, students will be conversant with the meaning of diversity and its application in real-life situations.
Engage: Motivation and Strategies of motivation
Motivation is significant at the beginning of the lesson to increase the learners interest in the lessons.
Evaluate: One of the motivation techniques included in the lesson is: warming up by engaging in small conversations with the children on how they are feeling, what they want to share and so forth.
Explore: The next step is a review which entails making students recall the previous lesson by asking them, What did we learn last time? Did you practice what we learned to do outside of class? Does anyone have anything to share about what we learned? The review is followed by introducing the topic and testing the knowledge of the learners.
Passing to the learners' realia
Pictures of people and items depicting several cultures
Finding what the students can say about what we have covered so far
Presenting students with a story with the theme of diversity
Allowing the learners to read the story while focusing on their comprehension.
Allowing students express their understanding of diversity through:
Pairing up the learners such that they converse on how they have understood diversity
Providing the students with prompts for them to engage in more conversation
Students explaining diversity to each other using different vocabularies
Scripted writing practice by using exercises from the textbook
Enabling students to relate what they have learned with their real lives
Role-play: learners creating their own conversations about diversity
Group decision-making: Groups coming up with the importance of diversity in the society using valid reasons
Informal assessment: oral questions on diversity
Formal assessment: scripted writing with questions on diversity
End of the lesson
Providing students with the assignment identifying aspects of diversity among their friends and family.
