Leadership experience as a high school basketball leader.
I vividly recall my high school's life mainly as a basketball leader who was highly regarded for the consistent winning of the basketball team in all games played primarily as a result of the cooperation of the team members credited to my best leadership skills. At this time as an individual, I had set my standards of excellence as one of the high school's renowned leader and excelled in all my responsibilities. I was appointed as the basket leaders after having volunteered for a quite some time for the passion of seeing the team succeed. It is no doubt that as a leader of the basketball I learned many things besides being exposed to many things that are some of my present memorable and experiences when it comes to leadership. In the team, there was involvement of different categories of the students from diverse backgrounds, beliefs, and understanding. Some of the critical challenges entail keeping the team together by way of having a common goal as well as eliminating interpersonal and intrapersonal conflicts that in some instances resulted in disagreements and uncooperative of the team members. Handling conflict in a fair and just manner to all members of the team was very challenging especially to a point where the greatest desire is to have the team be fully united and cooperative to confront the opponents. By way of the learning from other leaders and guidance from the teachers on the aspects of leadership I was able to face all the challenges associated with leadership. Besides, I brought together all the individual goals and aspiration of the basketball players to that of one team to the point of every player of the basketball was convinced that Together Everyone Achieves More. Hence the need for teamwork.

There is no doubt that the aspect of leadership entails that of influence. I am happy that I was able to influence basketball players to take action in the way I found to be more useful for the overall success of the team hence making a big difference for the team that used to lose most of its games. Specifically some of the actions I took include; first involvement of every team player in decision making which in turn increase the commitment of the team members. Secondly, I inspired the team to think positively about succeeding in every game hence practiced effectively with a winning mindset. Thirdly, I ensured that the team remained united by engaging in some other activities outside the game via engagement of team building techniques. Fourthly as the team leader, I led by example in making sure that everyone is treated respectfully and in a fair manner without any incidence of discrimination by practicing accountability and transparency within the team. Fifthly, I was always ready to take the initiatives of defending the basketball and more to that negotiate with school's management regarding the welfare of the basket players to the extent that I witnessed increased of the teams' allocation of resources. All the above actions and many more propelled the basketball team to become the school's winning team in all its games to the point that can only be considered as getting extraordinary things done.
Significant lessons learned about leadership from this experience.
If I were to advise someone in regards to being a leader based on my experience, I would tell such a person that leadership is a service upon which a leader is expected to serve others and not be served. A good leader should be sensitive to the needs of his/ her followers besides seeing what others cannot see thus being visionary to lead them towards that vision. The truth of the matter is that people are different and their differences are diverse. Dealing effectively with an individual's differences it is advisable for a good leader to have effective communication skills mainly giving others listening ears by way of seeking first to understand to be understood. It is equally imperative to note good leadership is a process of continuous improvement that strives in getting the best out the people.
